So I have been playing smash casually and have recently been trying to learn tech skills. I have wave dashing down, but I have trouble with L canceling in particular on a character. I have no problem L canceling moves regularly, but I have trouble when I L cancel on a character. So i'm just wondering, any tips? how long did it take for you to get L canceling down? Is it that I am so used to L canceling regularly now, I have a hard time doing it on a character?

Thanks p.s sorry if I post in the wrong sub forums it is my first post.

Do you know that you have to delay your L-cancel when you connect with a character (because that creates hitlag, which increases the time it takes before you land)? The more damage a move does the more hitlag it will have and therefore the longer you will have to delay your L-cancel; that's why some people suggest you practice L-cancelling on multiple Ice Climbers or using moves like Ganon's dair.

If you know that then you just have to notice when you go wrong (and whether it's too late or too early) and adjust accordingly. Eventually it will become totally subconscious.

Use 20XX if you can because it makes it much easier to actually know whether you successfully L-canceled or not. Alternate between L-cancelling normally and then L-cancelling on a character. Get to where you can just randomly alternate between the two without thinking about it. Also, once you get tired of practicing in training mode, do it in an actual game. A CPU will work for this. Doing it when you're actually fighting an opponent will feel different than in training mode. Just build muscle memory and you will do it without even thinking about it.

L-cancelling is something that shouldn't be strictly muscle memory, it should be visual. When you fall from a different height, or hit on shield, anything that will change up your timing, you should use the visual cue of your character nearing the floor or platform as your hint to press a shoulder button. Also, you can simply press the triggers in a bit (enough to trigger a lightshield) and that will count as an L-cancel. This should help reduce the amount of stress and pressure you put on your fingers and should make the timing a bit easier since you won't have to release as far when you go to follow up with a wavedash or tech something, anything using the shoulders really.

Try switching which trigger you use, or even try using z. I used z for a while but I moved down to the r button.
