I've been playing smash since Brawl launched, but only recently have I gotten into competitive play for Wii U/3DS. I'm a solo player; I really don't have any sparring partners. The first tournament I went to was a wakeup call; every round I played ended up with boots in my ass. I don't know all that much about technique, and I have no way to practice.

My main is Charizard, and alts are Samus, ZSS, and Bowser. Could I get some help? My local smash league isn't very beginner-friendly.

Make friends with the people at the tournaments. You'll be able to hang out and practice with them if you don't have any friends that play competitively already. I only had a couple people to play with at first, and now I have waaay more, and they're all down to practice all the time.

About your scene not being beginner friendly..... That doesn't sound right. Most people love helping new people, taking them under their wing and showing them the ropes. Maybe you were talking to the wrong people, I've rarely met people who with negative attitudes playing Smash.
Oh, and welcome to the Smash comp scene and to Smashboards!

Watch some streams. Shockwave and Smash @ Xanadu are good places to start, they have a lot of good players and some solid commentary. They will help teach you the basics of how Smash is played at a competitive level. You don't have to watch them live, they upload their previous broadcasts to youtube.

Unfortunately, apart from ZSS the characters you play aren't all that well-represented, once you get a basic feel for how the metagame works you'll have to start looking up specific players of those characters. The character boards on this site may be useful to locate top players of obscure characters.

You're starting off right coming to Smashboards, this site is the heart of the Smash Community.

We all were new players and had our unique experiences, but I think what really worked out great for many people who are in this for a long haul is to attend events and introduce yourself to your opponent.
After a game where you got a severe beating you can ask your opponent if they'd could give you some advice - try not to be vague though, ask them what they thought of your character choice and stage preference to start off and then ask if they remembered any specific openings where they were getting an advantage in the rounds you played.
After a few minutes of talking, see if they are genuinely interested in giving you advice and talking, if not then say thanks & good games and let them report the match, but if they seem to have some insight they can give you and are making eye-contact or genuinely connecting with you in language you can ask if they'd like to show you a few things on an open setup. If they are up for that then go ahead and accompany them when they report the match (you can let the TO know they are a strong opponent and hope to learn from their commitment to the game), and then go sit down and see what they have to show you.

Note: Many players may be more inclined to help you with your game mid-tournament whereas others will not (to keep their minds focused on competition). So you may want to offer spending some practice time after the tournament with them.

Firstly, you're going to want to drop Samus. High leaning curve, low potential, low skill cap. I tried to main her, I wanted her to be good and I tried to make her good. I learned everything about her, but it was outlcassed by everything. Switch from her, if you are serious about competitive play.

A good way to practice is to find people here, on smashboards. Invite them to skype groups and organize games.

Surround yourself in all things smash. It will help you learn about the game in ways you have never thought about. Surrounding yourself in the culture will let you see the distinctions between play styles and stages and character choices and celebrities. Just involving yourself in the community is an invaluable thing when entering the competitive scene. Make yourself known at tourneys, make friends, be outgoing. Drink a little if thats what it takes for you to be social. Basically, forge connections.

Before tourneys you should try for glory as training. YOu will probably search for an hour or so before you get a player who is exactly of your skill. Whenyou do find the perfect matchup, he and you will play for a very long session, and both of you will improve GREATLY. Thats how I trained, and I've achieved a passable level after a few months of online training.
