My winrate on For Glory has been 51% for over a week now. A member on SmashBoards who I faced online says I am terrible and should stop playing Smash altogether. I want to push myself to become a better player but I don't know where to start. Any help is welcome and thank you.

First of all, the person who said you were terrible and should stop playing Smash is a pretty big jerk.

Anyway, before you start playing in For Glory, make sure to learn your characters bread and butters first. Checking the Duck Hunt Duo category here on the forums should help you out some, and you can also ask questions to other Duck Hunt Duo players who were once in the same situation as you.

Here's a somewhat-basic guide I found in that category, which should give you somewhat good idea on what you should and shouldn't do when playing as Duck Hunt. (In any case you don't play Duck Hunt, just replace Duck Hunt with whichever character you prefer, I'm just basing this off of your profile.)

Most importantly, practice makes progress. Learning your favorite combos may be one thing, but aren't going to mean much if you can't preform them in battle. Once you feel confident, maybe jump into some less-serious online modes (For Fun, Free-For-All For Glory), and practice against some other players.

Also, don't be afraid to lose. Even the best of players crack under pressure sometimes. If you start getting angry at For Glory, don't be afraid to take a break from it. Play For Fun, Smash Run, whatever calms you down. You should also have fun while doing this. Smash Bros is a video game, and the main goal of that is to keep you entertained, not to upset or anger you.

Sorry if this sounds really dumb and cliched, but from previous experiences, this is what bumped my Win Ratio from a 50% to a 70% (and still rising). Good luck and have fun!

First of all, don't take such insults to heart. Criticism is only valid if it's done with good intent and helps improve your abilities in some way.

Secondly, just play. Find somebody to play with and just keep playing until you feel more confident. Then play with other opponents, win, lose, and keep playing regardless. You will lose sometimes, and that's okay. Every defeat is merely a prelude to a greater victory. You only need to learn how to make up for your mistakes and take every defeat as a latent critique on how you can improve.

Other than that, @ NeonBurrito NeonBurrito hit the nail on the head. He's said it best, methinks, and his advice is definitely worth heeding.

Beyond that, it's all up to you! Good luck and happy smashing~!

Late post, but whatever. Screw the guys that say you can't do it. I got good by never giving up, even if the opponent keeps winning, winning and winning some more. I know that might seem cliché, but it helped me. While during that losing time, just see what habits the guy has, and use them to your advantage. Train hard and prove the guy wrong in the rematch. That's the best part. I've been through this before in lots of games, Smash, TF2, and even in physical sports. But not giving up was the whole reason I got good at them!

Never back down!

Yeah, you need to play to be good. I sucked at Melee, bad. Mainly cause I had no one to play, but then Brawl came out. I played over 3000 hours of Brawl due to the online and college friends. I got better, a lot better. Now in Smash 4, I'd say I'm confident enough to play in tourneys.

For actual help, I suggest self inspection of your character and the play style you want to use. Do you want to be the aggressor, or do you want to play defense? What does it take to be aggressive in a game like Smash? What tools do you need to play defensively? Ask yourself as many questions as possible and try to find answers.
