I know my following point is completely irrelevant but it's still worth mentioning. Whenever my friends and I get together and play Melee, they always go straight for the most badass looking characters - you know who they are: Ganondorf, Samus, Captain Falcon, Link etc. These are guys with no past experience playing any sort of video games, Nintendo or otherwise. But for some reason they absolutely love Smash. (Imagine a bunch of football jocks going crazy over a game, it's not pretty.)
There is only one person I play Smash Brothers consistantly who after becoming more expertise at the game, picks a character simply because they're cool. I play Roy because I love Fire Emblem, not because he's cool and has fiery explosions. I also play Kirby who isn't exactly "badass" and my most encountered rival plays Yoshi.
A lot of the most played characters wouldn't rank as being dark or "badass". Heck, half of the roster doesn't even fit that bill.
On the other side of that coin, there are some characters who are left neglected. The point is, the characters who are less visually appealing get overlooked, underused, and overall, become a waste of a roster slot.
Really? In competitive play, everyone except Sheik, Marth, Fox and Falco are neglected not because people like them, but because they top higher on the tier list. Newcomers and beginner players pick the characters they like, which is the bigger variety. I've been to countless non-competitive and competitive tournaments alike, so I've had a lot of exposer to draw that from.
Now, I realize that every franchise has it's own dedicated fanbase who each feel their character deserves a spot in Brawl. But just because a Nintendo developer decides to create their own game and have bland looking characters to go with it, doesn't mean they deserve to waste space with them in Brawl.
The same token may apply to some other characters, but I don't feel this issue is as glaring. Besides, characters like Lucas and Captain Olimar make up for their lack of design with other qualities like psychic powers and Pikmin, repectively. The same can't be said for someone who wields a fishing pole and a butterfly net into battle. Lame.
What? How do you know that? It's could bring hilarious, effective and unique possibilities. Your idea of it being lame isn't the actual entity, but your own ideals and lack of creativity. Animal Crosser could roll out a carpet below his or her opponents feet and then flick it out to toss them in the air. Not only does it suit that character, but the fans of the series love it.
So you say there is always someone out there who enjoys playing the Animal Crossing games so much that they can't wait to use their little pacifist villager to violently murder others in hand-to-hand combat? If you're one of those people, I bet that when you're hanging out with your friends, they'll be like, "Yeah man I decided to play as Snake from now on. He's pretty cool. Who's your main?" And you'll be like, "Oh yeah well I think the Animal Crossing Villager is better so I'm playing as him." Give me a break.
There has never been a conversation like that in any regard to any game ever to my knowledge. Do other girls laugh at me for choosing a masculine tough guy character like Falcon or Roy, do Kirby and Pichu players get mocked for picking a cutesy character, do Clergy get thrown out of the church for playing Ganondorf and beating the innocent? No, this is Smash Brothers. Anyone in their right mind who has played the game knows every character is effective despite appearances.
You're playing a game where overly lovely dovey pink princesses beat up big muscular tough guys with turnips and golf clubs. This same game also has a battlehardened trained assassin running chasing cute deformed talking dinosaurs. Really, by that logic anyone who plays Smash Brothers is a laugh stock, which is far from the truth.
My sister plays Animal Crossing, everyday in fact. Do you think she will pick up a copy of Brawl and start bashing heads as an AC rep? Not a chance in hell. In fact, the one reason she plays it is because it's one of the only games that doesn't have anything to do with fighting or violence AT ALL. Animal Crossing has no place in this type of game. It's like making a fighting game for Sesame Street. It's just not happening.
Far from the truth. I'd love to play as Animal Crosser, as would many others. I can ensure you, Animal Crossing die-hards would play as Animal Crosser should they play Smash. And from the results of the E for All Demo, it's a game anyone can play, enjoy and do well. My mother never played anything other than puzzle or party games because she has a disliking for excessive violence, but I got her into playing Melee and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess no problem. Me and my other gal gamers prefer non-violent games, but if something is good then something is good. Play it because it's fun. Smash Brothers is too comical for violence to be an obstacle.
You can attempt to dismantle my post through numerous counterexamples. If you are one of these people, don't waste your time. I realize the faults in my armor, so try to understand the rationale of my perspective, please.
Now that's just ignorance. :/
Just like you can convey your message without wanting a response, so can I. I see and understand your point of views but define them as being incorrect.
