I think the role of a moderator is sort of complicated. The general impression I believe people have is usually that of what is stated here. The negativity associated with a task I personally dislike doing at times. I mean in terms of having to tell someone that they are probably being mean themselves, breaking/bending the rules laid out to give organization, etc.

The general role I feel moderators should have is nurturing discussion in whatever is suppose to be on topic. At the same time you sort of need order or rules to keep discussions organized. The whole reason we have sub-forums and main topics and such. In which case, the main tool of a moderator should be discussion I feel, but when necessary some tool to keep things organized. Such as simple things as moving, combining posts. In the extreme cases infractions (warnings) and finally bans of some sort.

As an example, this does not seem like a topic well suited for Melee Discussion, however, the Pool Room is our general discussion hub. In which case, this thread is being moved to said location.

I've been a forum goer on sites like GameSpot, Pojo, and such, and never in all my years have I seen a thread like this.

Not to sound like a college girl but I seriously, literally cannot even right now.

Typically we only ban ****posters and adbots, so as long as you're not either of those, then you don't have to worry about being banned.

In my experience, the mods here do a good job and don't get the credit they deserve. Yeah, some naughtiness and irresponsible posts slip through the cracks, but that's to be expected when you're dealing with 400+ users on a daily basis.

More power to 'em, it's a job I would absolutely detest myself. I can't handle that kind of responsibility and work ethic.

I'm not a mod/admin here, but I am on a few other sites, and no, doling out bans for a laugh isn't how I get my kicks. Unless it's an especially annoying spambot/vandal, those things can go die somewhere. As long as you're not too outrageous, you'll be fine on most sites, but if you're just going to be an arse, you're probably not going to last for long.

Honestly, I just like the red name. But really though, we actually try to avoid banning if we can believe it or not, it's about community growth and banning doesn't help with that usually. It's just a resort taken against very problematic users.

I wouldn't worry about it tbh.
