Anyone here who has a Wii ever explore the messages section? I have, and i found something. It's my Wii's address. I assume, that if I gave that address to someone, and I had thiers, we could exchange messages online. My guess, is that Nintendo could use that number for online play. Like a universal Friend Code. Comments?

That has brought me more hope then you can imagine. Nintendo needs to let someone else handle it's online policies ;D

And Nintendo isn't completely opposed to voice chat either, as shown by the decision to include it in the two new pokemon games.

I'm still very skeptical that such a fast-paced, frame-dependant game such as Smash is even possible online. Or if it IS possible, it would be very hard to play at the same level as one would offline. I mean... how could you possibly overcome internet lag? The 50 millisecond lag from a HDTV can mess people up.

Has there been any concrete confirmation, or at least a hint, that Brawl will be online?

However, I'm certainly happy that Nintendo is letting somone else handle whatever online its other games might have.

Eh, I've played the original Smash Brothers online, and I found it to be largely hit and miss, depending on who you where playing with, but their where a few matches which played almost as good as if we were in the same room, and that game wasn't designed for online play, so I'm sure Nintendo can do better.

Yeah, I too have worries of lag when playing Brawl online. Maybe that's one of the reasons that no release-date has been announced yet?

its not like the wii is 56k or something. it'll be fine. ever play counter-strike online? that's pretty fast paced.

I think the lag shouldn't be too bad at all provided both people have larger than 56k. I mean since the actual gameplay is restricted to 2 dimensions the data transfered would only have to be what actions the other player pressed, or item gets used / thrown etc. It's not like it's constantly uploading information about the animation or physics of the game. But i think if there is lag, it will be mostly of fault from the server.

Any FPS game uses clever gussing to know where you are and what you're shooting at. I'm not sure such extrapolation would work for Smash. Even then, unless you're playing on a LAN, CS can be laggy enough to ruin the experience.

And I'm pretty sure the bottleneck is not how MUCH information is sent between clients, it's how FAST it gets there. Physical proximity is the only thing that'll cure that.

Yeah, FPSs really aren't very good things to compare to Brawl.
In FPSs, you often have to lead your shots to the point where the person will be at because of lag.

Brawl is different, because it's far more than just bullets or a pistol whip. Spot dodging and power sheilding might end up being something completely based on luck. Hell even some spikes and combos can be completely ruined be a difference of 10 frames in lag time.

The least they could do is show real time pings next to the percents of each characters. That way we'll have some idea of what to expect.

I felt i had to respond to these posts...

first off.... read this for info

http://www.gotfrag.com/cs/story/5577/

what is this you ask? This is an explanation of how counter-strikes netcode works. The netcode is what helps sync low and high pings together with the server, causing seemless play.

Dont forget, we will be on nintendo's servers. Its due to this case that cheating will be impossible, as nintendo will be controlling all the data that is transmitted to each player.

anyway ... i just feel like nintendo is smart enough to make this work.

I don't think there will be much problem with lag. Of course it will depend on all the players connections, but have any of you played DOA2U or DOA4 online? It's very possible to have 4 players going at it with minimal lag. Maybe Nintendo should be hitting up Itagaki from Tecmo for some netcode tips. =p

I'm sure they'll handle everything fine though.
