I really haven't been paying attention at all haha. so can someone explain what ammibos do ? what is their purpose ? are they gonna be needed to play the game ?

I suppose I'll start with your last question: No they aren't necessary to play the game. Amiibos are basically computer-controlled characters in the form of a physical toy which you can upload to any Smash Bros WiiU game and save data on, sort of like a memory card for a specific character. You can alter that character's stats, train them to level up (apparently past level 9,) and use them to help you fight, or have them fight on their own. It's a small attraction that is apparently going to be first used for Smash WiiU.
