Amiibos online

I just want to clarify one thing: Will one be able to use the personally customized amiibo characters in standard online play? Or are they only playable in offline/local mode or is there some kind of amiibo specific online play?

Not sure, as we haven't heard anything about that yet, but they seem to be very local-centric. Train the amiibo at home, go to a friend's house, have the amiibo kick his/her butt, get stuff, rinse and repeat. Oh, and amiibos are also supposed to be like sparring partners. Having them work online would be great.
