Given that Amiibos promote customization, which is mostly banned online, how will the use of Amiibos themselves on normal online(Fun & Glory) be affected? In a worst case scenario I believe it will work like the Miis; usable only with Friends and offline.

which would suck because id have to use my friends to grind doh

I would be very surprised if online play supported Amiibo. But it would be a nice option in With Friends mode, for instance, teaming up against each player's Amiibos.

That would make for funny video content.

I'd guess it's friends only like all the other customization stuff.
And that would be a shame. I sincerely hope there is an option to allow Amiibos with default movesets and no custom moves online. That would be glorious.

Don't you have to be playing as a Mii to use an Amiibo? I thought that was the case. It seems rather pointless to say 'oh, I'm going to play online with an AI so I don't have to play.'

And it seems rather pointless that you'd have to select a Mii first, then an Amiibo. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Amiibos scanned on the character select? Wouldn't an Amiibo scan add a player synonymous with the character data?

Well if you play online it's either gonna be 1 on 1 or 4 player free-for-all or teams isn't it? But either way I don't see how bringing in your own CPU will work.

To be honest, I don't either.

But this question is still in my mind simply because of the remote possibility of facing a figurine online.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of Amiibos being a setting that can be turned on or off just like items, but only in "For Fun" online matches. It goes without saying they wont be on the competitive or "For Glory" scene.

I don't doubt that they would be forbidden in For Glory, but I don't see why For Fun, which is, well, for fun, would prohibit them.

imagine a video series like "Amiibo plays Smash Bros" :seuss:

To me it seems the Amiibos role in Smash (in the case of singleplayer at least) is something akin to a playable assisst trophy. When you scan the figure on the gamepad or whatever, you are replaced by the character you scanned and then play as that character. I actually odnt recall if in the E3 video Iwata was playing as Mario or simply spawned him in for assisstance using the figure. Either way, I would still see them as being a disableable feature.

Iwata summoned the figure; it fought for him. And it didn't replace him, since after the match both Mii and Amiibo Mario posed. The game treats Amiibos as separate players.
