First off, as we've seen so far, we are able to experience the new Smash Bros. game as it was intended since Melee; to play with trophies that come to life. Now, personally, I think this is a brand new and amazing concept combined with the fact that you can not only play as characters via those trophies, but you can level them up as you play; so now you and your character can level up together, and not one player nor trophy will be the same.

Seeing the new concept take place for the Wii U version of the game, we have to wonder the big question; will this be Tournament Legal? I say absolutely, because it's not anything that interferes with the game whatsoever, despite you probably having a more powerful character. This doesn't necessarily mean, however, that you'll still win with this character, if there's a better opponent player. Seeing this in action, people can either choose their Amiibo Trophies or go with a standard character, and the game will run like it does by default (normally).

Despite the customization option, this us still, in my honest opinion, tournament legal and viable. However, I want your opinions and your thoughts on if it should be tournament legal. What are your thoughts, everyone?

Now with some insightful updates, here's what's been confirmed to me:
No, they are CPU only characters. What I think, however, is that they can be used to help you in a special type of Amiigo Doubles Tournament, where it's Player & Amiigo vs Player & Amiigo. They could also be used to hone up your skills when fighting against them.

My friend used these to confirm his feelings against Nintendo.

When I explained that Amiibo aren't skylander clones and just because they're NFC statues doesn't mean Nintendo is ruining the game, and how when they're being used in Smash they're like a little personal trainable CPU, he said "at least skylanders lets you play as the statues" and "what's the point if you can't play as them".

I like the statues. I like their concept and use in the game.

(Oh, and I saw nothing that says you can play as them, by the way).

Um, it creates essentially a 2 v 1 situation with a potentially much higher than level 9 CPU against a player simply because you bought a figure.

If you really think that's going to fly in competitive settings you have bigger and better questions to be asking.

Well, you can actually play as them in the game. Maybe I had forgotten to say that.
No, I mean in the video, nothing said you could do that.
I watched it 3 times.

Unless you can prove me wrong because I missed something, they're just trainable CPU's.

Anything that transfers into a game means you can play as them.
Uh.
How, exactly?

Actually, the statues are YOU playing as your character and leveling them up. It's basically like any RPG game, except going towards Smash Bros. standards.

I kinda wished that if they were going to implement NFC compatibility, they would at least make it so that it would be downloadable.

The event implied that they are pretty much only CPU controller characters you train, with their only purpose to serious competitive players being that they could potentially be a brawl x10 level of stupid cheap as heck CPU when training against CPUs.

Oh, I was referring to the fact that when you put them on the gamepad and play them in the game they're CPUs.

It doesn't matter either way; It's completely optional.
If people don't want to use them there's no reason they have to, just don't put them on your gamepad.

I personally probably won't be using the little trained CPUs and will probably just collect the figures, but they have no impact on gameplay other than themselves being trainable CPUs you can fight against / pit against other amiibos / have teamed up with you.

You're incorrect. The video specifically stated you use them as training partners or whip them out to help you 2v1 friends. They are CPU controlled only.

If you can play as your little character, and the system for leveling up could make you stronger just because of the figurines, I don't see it being legal.

Plus, adding in the extra CPU also seems odd, maybe a special side event 2v2 kinda deal, but not standard.

One thing i hate about this forum is that if someone creates a topic about something new, you may are not allowed to create another one with the same theme. Now due this thread, maybe my future thread is going to closed and is sad because i think that my thread was going to be way more interesting than this one...

You can train them to be a huge level cpu then fight against them instead of just being limited to a level 9 cpu, or you could of use them to fight against other people's figures and such.

Completely optional with no impact on gameplay. You don't play as them.

If it's of the same theme and topic, you can just bring the discussion to the existing thread.

Ah, that's right! Maybe you can't play as them, but rather, you can still use them to hone your skills in the game.
But now I raise the questions:
Should Amiigos be allowed in Doubles?
Should there be an Amiigo Type of Tournament where you can use Amiigos or a Player & Amiigo Doubles?

What's more interesting is how the CPU will learn. From what I heard and understand I seems to be more than simple stats boost and customizable move set. They were implying that the CPU might learn and adapte...Seems a bit far fetched and hard to believe but I'm curious to see just how far they went with this.

Oh and yeah, Amiigos Only match should be a lot of fun :)

This may finally be the first Smash Game that has the rumored "adaptable AI"; and this marks the first Smash Game where the AI is actually good instead of...well...

You are catching part of the idea, but if you present the idea like that, everyone would think that you are a casual scrub. You need solid arguments to make understand to the people that Amiibos can be use in competive ways. - Raetah, potential future Amiibo Trainer.

I'm cool with this whole concept since it's not on the level where you have to buy a statue inorder to get the character like skylanders, but it's optional. I can see myself collecting some of these as an hobby. But as far as these being tourney legal, I can't see it. Not for it being an foolish idea, but because out of all the things that we've seen that come from "normal gameplay" (move customs, etc) have been banned on sight, so I can see this being banned on sight.

Unless they can store usable customizations, I don't think we'll see much of them at tournaments.

I really hope we can go in-depth with the AI though. You could train Brawl's CPUs to do simple techs, so I have high hopes.

I like the concept. I will probably get 1 of them when they first come out and just train them to become stronger and maybe these could bring more of a challenge than level 9's. It would be a nice touch if they have different colors too so you can make them a little more personal.

Level 10 is also confirmed for Smash 4.

When I first saw the figurines with Skylanders, I thought that it was a shameless cash in, and that nobody but 10 year olds would actually go for it. Then I saw Disney, but I chalked it up to a typical cash grab by them, nothing out of the ordinary. Then I saw the Smash Bros figurines with official Wii U support, and I died a little on the inside.

It's not like they unlock anything important.

Why would anyone think someone would be able to use it in competitive play?

And if your playing with your friends, all you have to do is decide together if you want to use the figures or not

I wouldn't worry with Nintendo's stance on DLC.
I know, but there's a first for everything. When it comes to corporations and shameless cash grabs, you have to treat it like children throwing temper tantrums: you can't cave, or they'll just do it more often and with greater intensity.
