I went to a smash 4 tourney and was playing some friendlies with this guy and somebody approached holding a Luigi amiibo and asked if we wanna play doubles with him and his amiibo. The amiibo was clean of equipment besides having ice balls, we did win the set but after it I decided to train my Pikachu amiibo to a competive doubles level (3 stock, Team Attack on, No Items), my amiibo team does pretty well against my friend and sister and I'm wondering if we could hopefully have amiibos for teamates like in melee how if you don't have a teammate you team with a lv. 9 Luigi. Now I know that whoever owns an amiibo can agree that amiibos gain very strong AI the more they level up and seem almost unbeatable and that can worry some people but amiibos have already found there way into the competitive scene: http://kotaku.com/amiibo-nearly-wins-smash-bros-tournament-1662901112 The amiibo did do very well but it was beatable.

TLDR: I want amiibos legal in doubles and I want your thoughts.

Just want to point out one thing: if customizations are turned on, amiibos will have higher base stats (attack, speed and defense). These stats will be better the higher level it has, regardless of if you have fed them equipments. With that said, I really don't think amiibos should be allowed in tourneys with custom moves.

I'm running this sort of bracket as a side-event at a tournament with some friends to see how it goes, but I like the idea in general.

I'd have sworn those stats were applied regardless of settings or custom moves. But either way, at a higher level of play, those stats may be the only thing keeping AI in the running against good players. I don't think it's an issue, personally, but I can see where you're coming from.

I can see that a very good player should still be able to beat amiibos, but I kinda don't really like the idea that they have superior stats to players. I feel like my Villager amiibo lives a lot longer than a Villager should be able to live, for example. I think I read before that the stats only apply if customs are enabled, but I'm not completely sure. I don't care that much if people decide to allow amiibos in tourneys (the idea of it is pretty fun) but I wouldn't allow them myself while TOing.

Despite all of Nintendo's schtick about "training" amiibos, in reality they're essentially the same as a level 9 CPU. This means that they have a frame-perfect reaction time/can read your inputs, and cannot be baited into airdodging or rolling. You're playing a fundamentally different game against an amiibo, so it would be ridiculous to allow them as teammates.

The way I see it is as this: Amiibo fighters are at least as good as the player that trained them, so instead of pitting them against other players, why not have a category of tournaments for specifically the amiibo fighters?

That actually sounds kinda cool. However, I see a bit of a flaw in that. I heard a story recently in which someone bought a DK Amiibo and trained it to the highest level (I don't have one so I'm a bit un-credible on Amibos), but in the story, it said that after training the Amiibo really hard, DK would only grab and walk around with the other player, with the occasional pummel but nothing really else. I'd find it kindahard to sit through a match of, well... that.

I think you would have to record my reaction if someone walked up to me with an Amiibo and said let's play. It's MUCH more dependable than if your partner bails and you have to have a Level 9 CPU sit in though!
