In some bizarre turn of events, I ended up with 2 Marth Amiibos, rather than letting one go to waste I decided to have a look inside and see what I could do with it.

Getting in isn't easy, but I did eventually and took out the NFC chip and put it inside my Smash Gamecube controller. I now have a portable Marth Amiibo (and I could add another to the other side of the controller should I ever decide to).

Here is a terribly lit video showing it working.

Here are some images for anyone curious about that too.

The NFC chip inside the broken base.

The base as seen from under, it was deeper than I was expecting.

A few things to note -

The NFC chip is sticky on one side, you could use this to your advantage it you wanted to do something with it.

It is impossible to get inside without damaging the base somehow.

This next one is a big one.

METAL deactivates the NFC chip. I was having a lot of issues with getting this to work, it seems placing anything metallic near the chip just makes it stop working. I eventually got around this by wrapping it in a few layers of paper.

I originally wanted to put it where the rumble is located inside the controller but the metal on the rumble just nullifies it. I don't think it would be possible without actually removing the motor.

Considering how much amiibos have been anthropomorphized by some people, this is almost morbid as much as it is cool.
Might be an option I would consider if the figure on top somehow gets ravaged, lol.
Still really cool though.

Its just a small, bendable circle with what I assume is circuitry on it. I was pretty rough with it too and it still works.
Interesting. I assume an EEPROM is contained in the circle but I don't know the size of said EEPROM.
