E3 2014: Nintendo on Amiibo, Smash Bros., and Custom Figurines

At first I was like "wtf??? Something ELSE I gotta buy, eh?" But it appears you would only buy it for things like ease of transporting your custom movesets to your friend's house if you went over to play and didn't want to sit and input all that junk, you can just "plug-n-play" so to speak, though you'd need one for each character you intend to play as with custom moves...

Eh, I dunno. I haven't seen much talk on swf about this additional feature that is planned to be launched alongside Smash for WiiU... Unless they make it so you have to own one I prolly won't get one...

Also what do ppl think of DLC? I hate the idea of DLC, I hate having to pay extra for something. When I pay 60+ dollars for a brand new game, I want the full experience for that, and if the designers put stuff out later (customization, extra levels, costumes, etc.) then I think it should be free to download. That's just me tho, I'm cheap, a lot of people have no issue with paying extra.

It's just when you add it up, imagine 60 bucks plus 10 DLC installments at 5 bucks a piece. Now your game is really costing you 110 dollars. Who in their right mind would spend so much for ONE game (excluding game packages like Guitar Hero or Time Crisis). But again, I'm old and I'm cheap, lol. I used to get brand new Atari games back in the 80's for 12.99+tax so of course these days maybe it's normal to expect 100+ for a "total gaming experience."

DLC is fine with me.

Though this is coming from someone who bought every single DLC for FE:A (WaifuEmblem Awakening)

I'll probably buy the Amiibos for the characters I'll main/focus on.

I think the amiibos are a cool idea, I like that it's not needed and completely extra to the game so it's not like anyone is really missing out if they don't buy them, except for maybe the ease to automatically have your custom moveset at your friends house and to play against/withh a stronger cpu, neither of which I would do yet I still want them even if they just end up staying on my shelf doing nothing, they still look pretty cool.

I don't mind DLC so long as it is not necessary to play the game, DLC should be something considered after the game is made and shipped out to help improve it. Game patches that either fix bugs or balance issues should be free, but things like costumes and levels I think we should pay for, within reason obviously, that DLC is completely unnecessary and totally just extra stuff but people still have to put in the time and effort to make it and therefore should be paid for that effort. I also think it's a bit greedy to buy a game that is complete and expect anything extra that is made for it later on to be free.

I support DLC for Smash, as long as it isn't tied to amiibos. I am not buying expensive figurines for extra content in the game.

I would totally pay $10 for a few more characters, stages, etc.

I'll probably end up buying all the amiibo figures because my wallet hates me and i love Smash too much. And all DLC, because again, i love Smash too much. Especially if we get an Inkling as DLC.

I love the idea of amiibo, I mean even just owning the figure itself is pretty cool but it seems even if you don't buy them you don't miss out on anything content wiss. Which is how I think they should be handled.

Also most of my friends aren't good at smash so being able to train this figure to be able to compete is really enticing to me and it'll be especially great when no one's around to play. Plus isn't this what smash has always been about toys coming to life?

As for dlc, I don't exactly agree with what your saying. If dlc is made post release it can allow the team to finish things they couldn't before their deadline. Look at mewtwo in brawl he was partially started but not finished due to time constraints. Dlc removes that issue allowing them to go back post release and add more to the game

Thay being said i strongly disagree with you in that dlc should not be free. These designers pour a lot of time and work into it they deserve compensation.

...they deserve compensation.
Okay, I understand your sentiment, but seriously, they DO get compensated. They're all salary, yo. It's not as if they only get paid per game pack sale, or per download...

The reason I dislike DLC in general (not just for Smash) is because it gives game companies an excuse to charge customers upwards of twice as much than MSRP for a single game. These aren't things like World of Warcraft. PC gaming is a totally different animal. For starters when you buy an upgrade package you're getting a LOT of stuff for your money, that's why you're paying almost half the price of the "starter kit." But for a video game? It's completely nontraditional.

That being said, I am open to the idea that traditions do change, and now that these consoles are all basically PC hardware giants anyway, with internet, sure. I mean you can download the game itself instead of buying "the cart" as we used to say. So in that regard, it's understandable I suppose. But the whole "well we didn't have time to do this so now we're going to release as DLC 6 months later and charge you for it" how's that even remotely fair? Are we saying that IF the character had made it into the game on time that the MSRP of the game pack would have gone UP 5 bucks? Nooooo. It'd still be the same damn price. So why the hell should I have to pay 5 dollars extra for stuff that "didn't make it before deadline." Seriously, as a gaming company you could just arbitrarily draw up any deadline release date and have a locker full of crap you "intended" to put in the game, and then conveniently scoop it out as DLC once every few months - continuing to make profit in other words, on a game that's already been bought once! Meh. It's a shady business model, is all I'm saying. If they're going to have DLC it should be totally optional, nothing so important as an entire character, or mode. Crap like alternate costumes, or soundtracks, sure. Who cares, really? But think about it, let's say Mewtwo WAS downloadable content (imagining the Wii was capable of it) 6 months after Brawl's release, and let's say he ended up being a high tier character. Now the only people able to even use him are people that were willing to come out of pocket to buy him post-release? It just seems unfair is all. It's not our (the consumer) fault game developers didn't "have time" to finish the game.

On another note, though, I've reconsider amiibos, for the sheer collectors value alone I think I'll definitely get them.
