In September, having received a $100 gift certificate from a friend for amazon.com I decided to use that certificate to pre-order Super Mario Galaxy and Brawl. The certificate paid for the games, but I decided to pay ~$20 for 2-day shipment "I want my items faster. Ship them as they become available.".
Yesterday, I kept checking my order status. And although my copy was supposed to be shipped that day. It never was. I sent an e-mail complaint and they responded that my shipment preferences were "group my items into as few shipments as
possible", WTF? I used the process they said to change my shipping options, and now found that my new estimated time for delivery was November 20. Huh?
I responded to their e-mail that no, my problem wasn't rectified, and filling out their form they called my phone number. The representative clarified that of course, my shipment option was "I want my items faster. Ship them as they become available", as that's what I paid for on my order. The real issue was, that Amazon.com did not have enough copies of Super Mario Galaxy to fill their pre-orders. My question is how the hell can a professional company not know enough to order enough copies of a game to fill their pre-orders! Amazon.com is receiving more copies on the Thursday, the 15th so given the weekend, my 2-day shipment now means that it will arrive the 20th. The representative told me there was nothing further that he could do, and my only options are to too stick with the new delivery time or to cancel my order.
Great, I pre-ordered my game since I wanted a guaranteed copy. Now I have to call around game stories in my area and hope that they have extra copies in stock. When I find one that does, I will of course cancel my order. (Though since I will get my gift credit restored I will have to find something else to spend it on.) But had I known Amazon.com would be so incompetent I would have simply pre-ordered from such a store in the first place and gotten my copy yesterday.
In summary: From what I've heard from the representative, Amazon.com is too incompetent to get enough copies to cover their own pre-orders. Amazon.com lies to its customers on web to make it think its late deliveries are their fault (or else it changes their shipping preferences behind their backs). Never use Amazon.com to pre-order a game.
