Smash Wii U Am I the only one who eshopped this game instead of picking up a disc copy.

I felt like it would a better idea because I got Mario Kart 8 a few months back and after a few weeks of playing it I got a dirty/scratched disc error in the middle of a race and I really wanted to avoid that especially with Smash.

I'm a sucker for physical copies so I didn't get it digitally, but quite a few of my friends got it digitally

No. You'll never be the only one.

And was your disc actually dirty or scratched? If that's the case, then for everyone's sake, please take better care of your games.

Anyway, when it comes to Nintendo games, there's really no benefit to either side since if something screws up, you lose the digital copy (afaik, not sure if that's still a thing. Please correct me if I'm wrong).

People with a collector's mentality will more often than not pick up the physical copy whenever possible.

People who don't care about that and just want to play the game will often opt for the digital copy.

There's a healthy helping of both kinds of people. So.

I downloaded my copy. Made enough room on the hard drive so I could download right onto the system and not have to use an external hard drive. I haven't had any problems with it.

Appreciate the reply. And I do take good care of my games just so you know. There were never any scratches on my disc to begin with. Turns out my Wii U couldn't handle a tiny fingerprint on the side of the disc. A little soap and water made the disc 100% spotfree. But I took it back to the store for a new one anyways because I afraid the disc might be defective. And I never got the error after that. Sorry for the TMI but I just wanted to make things clear.

And yeah I had to google "afaik." lol.

Hey, just checking. 'Cause I know way too many people who don't give a second thought to it... and it's pretty upsetting. So it's really good to hear you take care of your stuff.

And yeah, I probably would have done that too. Better safe than sorry, I say.

Haha, sorry about that. People do tell me my acronym usage can get a bit ridiculous sometimes.

I take extremely good care of my physical discs, even as a kid, so stuff like that is never a worry for me. My original copies of Tekken 3, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot, and other games from almost two decades still work.

To be fair, even they don't have an instant redownload thing in place yet, they are pretty good working with you to recover your digital content for systems. I had a few full digital games on my 3DS when it broken, and when I got a new one the recovered them for me.

Consumer rights mean something to me so I don't want to willingly give them up. Being able to own the games I buy is important to me.

Download games would be fine if they were DRM free (GOG sells DRM free download games) but Nintendo puts a lot of restrictions on their download games, so you are paying more for less if you buy them. If you buy them, you are part of the reason there are so many problems with modern gaming.

Unfortunately for Smash, even if you buy the physical copy, you won't get the full game. Balance updates, Mewtwo, the Miiverse stage and anything else they add in the future will have DRM so no one can own it. 10 years from now if someone buys a used physical copy of Smash Wii U, they will be stuck playing the base game with unbalanced characters. As a retro gamer, this upsets me. I understand that all of these updates are free so I guess I can't complain too much about them but they still have a negative affect on retro gaming and consumer rights.

On a related note, Amiibo is basically a physical version of DLC (if that makes any sense), and while it is absolutely horrible to have to spend over $600 to have full access to the game that you bought for $60, at least this content can be owned.

The exception to this would be online only games, like MMOs. I can understand why those games would completely cease to exist after several years.

I eShoped the 3DS version, but I have a hard copy of the Wii U version, which I prefer.
