Am I the only one who can't pick a main?

I've been playing Project M for about 4 months now and I still can't settle into anyone. I'll main someone one week and then someone else the next. I do consistently play Lucario but I alternate between different characters all the time. Am I the only one with this problem?

I don't think main means you exclusively use one character. I think most players alternate between characters because: 1.) it's fun 2.) you learn more about the game/ everyone's strengths and weaknesses. 3.) it gives you the opportunity to find the characters you are good with.

It sounds like Lucario is your main. But you can have more than one. And often times mains change.

Yeah it just seems like a lot of the good players I know on Netplay are known for like one character.

I main Ike, but I've been shopping for a secondary since forever. I'm very consistent with Mario, really enjoy Zamus mobility and playstyle, *know* that Samus is amazing and enjoy her as a character but can't seem to do well with her Smash incarnation, used to secondary Wolf and have picked him up again recently ... yeah. It's hard to decide. Oh I also mess around Ganon very often to de-stress after practicing hard Ike techs, and Falcon when I want to mess around. And I sometimes I select Fox and only use USmash.

PM's fun.

I have a friend who mains Samus in Melee but is still looking for a new main in PM because he doesn't like the feel of the new Samus as much, so no, you aren't the only one.
I'm still trying to decide on a secondary to handle the matchups my Lucario can't. My current characters of interest are Snake, Ness, and Zero, though many of Zero's bad MUs are the same bad ones for Lucario.

Why are you calling him Zero?

Zero's just an alt costume of Armada after all

I'm the opposite and a bit like Lordling, my main is Meta Knight, but I can't find a secondary I can stick to for the life of me.

pls don't say Zero.

I can't help but think Marvel vs capcom even though you mean ZSS.

I can't choose no main. Unless I start going to tourneys I have no reason to.

Besides. sticking to one character only makes things boring for me. Since I like variety and the PMBR gave us so much of it, there's just too many characters that I have to play.

Oh man if Lyn, knuckles, and Isaac ever hit the board I don't think I'll ever have a single character again...

I main Ness and Mewtwo. Then Lucas is my secondary. I've focused on characters that play fairly similarly, so that brings me a lot of challenges when an unwanted matchup comes along.

That said, once you know someone well enough where you can pick them up and go hard in the paint anytime (Sounds like you'd have Lucario), it's totally fine to traverse unknown territory. Get to know everyone, and when necessary pull out Lucario. Most importantly have fun with it. Maybe that's corny but if you enjoy switching around consistently, go for it.

Keep shopping around, you usually know who your main will be when you keep selecting them every time you do a salty runback.

I flip around with mains all the time too. Though I only have 3 strong, definitive mains, I still play 10 or 15+ characters on a regular basis. It's just too much fun playing half the cast.

I'm still fishing around for a main in PM. However, I THINK I have narrowed it down to a choice between one of the following 3 though; :4pit::4charizard::ness2:

They all feel great. I just can't figure out which one has the absolute best feel for me.

I'm having issues figuring out a main for sktar and I imagine I'll continue having this problem for the next few months after. And just like you I'm still so new to competitive smash, only slightly more than a half year at this point. So far I've bounced between Ganon, Marth, Link, Toon Link, Kirby, Wolf, Ike, Roy, Captain Falcon, and Samus.

The good thing though is that I'm getting first hand experience at lots of different elements of Smash, and my tech skill is growing fast in all sorts of different areas. Marth is showing me how important DDs, pokes, spacing, pivots, and WDs are for instance because of the crazy good mileage he gets out of them. Roy is showing me how important optimal DI is because of his combo weight. Ganon has terrific wavelands, so playing him forces me to get good at that. Wolf and Ike have been amazing practice for OoS and JC techs. So on and so forth.

Basically my exact same story but with different characters.

Nah, it's normal man. I think pretty much everyone has trouble sticking to one character. I thought Mario was my main, but then, I've also been playing Lucas and Falcon a lot. Just play whoever you want to.

There are 9 characters in this game I really like playing. Only like 2 i'd use in a serious setting though.

It took me 10 months to find a solid main after pretty much utilizing the whole cast. I would move around characters all the time and find new ways to counter matchups but eventually gravitate back to Sonic everytime. Eventually I realised that if I stick with this character to play seriously in a tournament setting then I'll achieve a lot better results than I would alternating. I still play pretty much everyone in friendlies though.

Same boat, except I use Zss... Recently my training partner has convinced me to main bowser at the same level and I agree, he is surprisingly fun.

I have a friend who really can't decide on their main so they literally practice a wide variety of characters. They might not be fantastic with just one, but they certainly have fantastic coverage, not being able to decide might actually be a very good thing.

I pretty much use every character. Samus is my main though, followed by Link as a secondary and Snake as a tertiary. Others that I really enjoy playing as are Lucas, Bowser, DK, Mewtwo, Luigi, Roy, Captain Falcon, GnW, and ZSS.

RUINING EVERYTHING WITH EVERYBODY ELSE
You could main a single character or small group or something for a short time and just go hard with them for a while
Force yourself to main someone for month without wavering or something then you'll get down to the gritty deets of the game with them
Then move on if you want
But stick to it like a boss for a bit
Binge style the way nausicaa says and it almost always has results since literally nothing else has ever worked ever
Even those people working with 1 character forever are technicaly on a big binge with them

I just pick who is the best once they're agreed on and make sense as the best because I can never win so it doesn't matter anyway MUHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAAAAAA

Find a character to focus on and learn the mechanics solidly with him.
Keep playing everyone and see if that focus character is still your best, if so then main him, if not then... yeah.

The better you get, the more you'll understand a playstyle for a character and what coincides with how you play.

I can never pick a main in any video game. I get so dedicated on one character then decide that a different one looks cooler and switch.

I've only started to play the game for less than a month, and already I have a bunch of "mains". It's pretty much just characters I really enjoy playing. I first started off with Ganon, and he will always hold a dear place in my heart, as well as the character I would probably main at a moment's notice. However, I can also play a pretty sick CF, I really like Squirtle's playstyle, Lucario just looks like a beast, Wolf is the easiest of the Spacies for me to play, Diddy has great banana game, and I really like Wario's Up-Air. I also used to play a bit of Roy and Marth, before realizing I really suck at them. However, I think I'm slowly starting to have three characters that I would probably play in a competitive scene, which would be Ganon, Captain Falcon, and Squirtle. After playing a multitude of characters, I just came to realize I liked characters that did a crap ton of damage while using that big "surprise factor" to quickly outplay your opponent. For example, Ganon looks really slow and clunky, yet he has a great aerial game and has a lot of kill potential. Falcon's main kill move is his knee, and it's so crucial that a lot of mindgames have to be played in order to land it. Squirtle looks hecka small and weak, but his aerials are amazing and his Up-Smash is god. By quickly understanding what I like to play, I got to easily weed out characters that didn't seem so interesting, such as Samus, ZSS, and Ice Climbers.

Essentially, what I'm trying to say, is that eventually, you will find a playstyle that you really enjoy over all of them, and that will allow you to select certain characters that you know you will enjoy. Because I knew I really liked Ganondorf, when I first played Falcon, I already guessed that I would like him as well.

Coming from Melee, I have a similar problem. I was a Jigglypuff main in Melee and I never played anything else. In Project M, however, I hate using Jigglypuff.

In M, I use Mario, Charizard, Squirtle, Marth, Diddy Kong, and occasionally Jigglypuff as a counterpick. I'm probably the best with Squirtle, but I also feel that Squirtle has the least potential of these characters. I'd like to settle into one of these characters more permenantly, but it's difficult.
