Am I not waveshining correctly?

So I shine Bowser, then wavedash afterwards, but Bowser flies too far back horizontally and I can't reach him with a single wavedash, and he's already up on his feet before I can shine again. What am I doing wrong?

Well I tried again last night. I can JUST barely waveshine Link but I still can't do it with Bowser.

Your problem is very simply not wavedashing far enough as far as I can tell. You need to move your analog stick closer to 0 degrees or 180 degrees going right or left, respectively. I like to do it by almost rolling my stick from absolute 270, straight down, to whichever direction I'm moving such that it hits about 195/345 by the time I input the wavedash.

Alternatively you're just cancelling the shine to slowly, but if you're still managing to land it on link that probably isn't the issue.
