Am I being dumb or what...

I just got PM for the first time somewhat recently, and noticed that alternate stages is a thing. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but can you get to the alternate stages without additional modding? The only thing I've found is on the PM site mentioning holding Z while picking the level, and someone else saying hold L to get to the alternate, but that's not working. Am I missing something? (I'm playing on the dolphin/netplay version if that matters)

If you are still using the iso netplay method, alt stages won't work.

Move to the virtual Sd method.
