I've been thinking about a way to make a match take as long as possible. This is what I came up with:

SSB4 Conquest
Terminology

Owned (stage)
- An owned stage is one that you have previously won on. Ownership of stages determines owned characters.

Owned (character) - An owned character is one that has appeared in the game on which your owned stages are based. Only characters that are owned may be played. In the case of team games or both teams owning the same character, different characters must be chosen.

Final Battle - The Final Battle is the determining match of the game. The winner of this goes home with whatever prize there was to be had.

Dead - This is a state where a character may no longer be played. A character enters this state when the player playing that character is defeated. Depending on the desires of the players, this may occur only during the Final Battle, or at any point during the game.
Game Rules
Gamerules:
2 stock
6 min
Items set to off and none
Team Attack on, in the case of team games.
Custom Specials allowed.

Legal stages (Wii U):
Pilotwings
Duck Hunt
Battlefield
Town and City
Castle Siege
Lylat Cruise
Halberd
Kongo Jungle 64
Delfino Plaza
Ω Version of any other stage
Final Destination*

Legal Stages (3DS):
Battlefield
Yoshi's Island
Prism Tower
Arena Ferox
Tomodachi Life
Ω Version of any other stage
Final Destination*

*Final Destination cannot be chosen until both players own at least one character. Choosing Final Destination begins the Final Battle, at which point, only Final Destination may be played on. The Gentlemen's Rule does apply.
Gameplay
Round One:
On round one, rules are set, alliances are made, and all players select Random. A stage is agreed upon, and the game follows through as if it were a typical tournament game.

Round Two:
On round two, the winner(s) of the previous game must now choose from their owned characters. If only one character is owned during a doubles match, one player picks that character, and the other chooses Random. The losing player(s) gain no new characters, and picks Random again.

Subsequent Rounds:
Players continue performing the steps listed in Round Two until either:
Final Destination is picked
All stages are owned, forcing the choice of Final Destination
Final Battle
When Final Destination is picked, the Final Battle begins.
The rules are changed henceforth to 1 stock, 5 minutes. All other rules remain the same.
Final Destination is the only stage to be played here. (Gentleman's rule applies)
All players chose one of their owned characters.
The game proceeds normally.
The character(s) played by the loser(s) are now dead and can no longer be played by either team.
This repeats until all of a team's owned characters are dead.
The team with characters left by the end of the game wins.

In the event that all non-FD stages are owned by the same player, that player wins, and the Final Battle is skipped.

Suggestions for fiddling with this ruleset will be taken into consideration.
