Has anyone noticed that Smash Bros for 3DS has a lot of focus on classic games?

we have classic F-Zero stage, Balloon Fighter stage, Gameboy stage, Pacman stage. and megaman, pacman, duck hunt, and Little Mac were made playable and additionally the allstar mode goes in order from earliest characters to newest.

Do you think it's intentional?

Nintendo is a company that gets a lot of its power from its legendary IPs. Of course it's intentional. They're giving fans what they want.

I wish.
If anything, this game has a lot of focus on newer Nintendo IPs. If it was a good or bad move is up to debate.

Stage Roster in terms of new (not returning) stages heavily focuses on the 3DS and DS games with a bit of NES and SNES on the side.

I've made a list of 3DS stages the other day and included the console of origin.

Green = Recent Era (3DS/DS/Wii/Wii U)
Blue = Classic Era (NES/SNES/GB/Arcade)
Grey = Middle Era (N64/GC/GBA)

3D Land - Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
Arena Ferox - Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS)

Balloon Fight - Balloon Fight (NES)
Boxing Ring - Punch Out!! (Wii)
Find Mii - 3DS Streetpass (3DS)

Game Boy - Kirby's Dream Land (GB)
Gerudo Valley - Ocarina of Time [3D] (N64, 3DS)
Golden Plains - New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)
Living Room - Nintendogs (DS+3DS)

Magicant - Mother 1 (NES)
Mute City - F-Zero (SNES)
Pac Man Maze (Name Pending) - Pac Man (Arcade)

PictoChat 2 (DS)
Prism Tower - Pokemon X/Y (3DS)
Rainbow Road - Mario Kart 7 (3DS)
Reset Bomb Forest - Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS)
Spirit Train - Spirit Tracks (DS)
Tortimer Island - Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS)
Tomodachi Life - Tomodachi Life (3DS)
Unova Pokémon League - Pokemon Black & White (DS)

Wily's Castle - Mega Man 2 (NES)

(Feel free to correct any mistakes. I might be missing a stage and Punch Out might not be just presenting Wii. Keep in mind this is about the new stages, not returning ones.)

As for newcomers: Characters that debuted in the recent era (Wii/3DS) slightly outnumber characters that debuted in the Retro era (NES/Arcade) And there's very few characters that came from the middle era (N64/GC). However, do you consider Village be from the recent era since their designs are based of City Folk? Or do you count Villager from their debut game for the N64?

In terms of characters, I would say it's pretty balanced. In terms of stages, it's heavily sided on new than old

I actually thought Villager was referencing the GCN Animal Crossing, to be honest. Sure they don't wear hats, but Villager's win theme is from the GCN game, not from City Folk (which used a different main theme entirely). Of course I COULD BE WRONG -- Animal Crossing 64 could've used the same theme song, but I immediately recognized the ties to the GameCube after playing a round as Villager in the demo.

About that last sentence, Animal Crossing 64 is actually the same game as the Gamecube one if I'm not mistaken.

But yeah I consider Villager more middle era than recent era despite they are using his Wii design since most characters get updated designs anyways. I usually go by debut.

If anything Little Mac would be modern since he got a game on the Wii. If you want a retro there's Megaman and Duck Hunt for ya.

Why are Wii Fit Trainer, Shulk, Greninja, Lucina and Robin newcomers then? All characters that didn't even exist since the last Smash game. If anything, I think this game doesn't have ENOUGH old franchises!

I was quietly hoping for balloon fighter to be a character. I do enjoy the retro characters and found it a disappointment that Ice Climbers isn't initially in the roster.

It would make a lot of sense for the 3ds version to have focused on retro, but it's still dominated by modern terms.

Mega Man would be modern too. Now, I haven't played every single game but I do know that there are 2 games on PSP (1 if you only count Original and not X) and also Mega Man 10 on WiiWare, XBL, and PSN.

It does have a lot of classic, but it also has a lot of new. Kid Icarus uprising, Fire emblem awakening and Animal crossing new leaf all had characters arrive from those three titles. Some of the more popular 3DS titles.

I also forgot to mention Prince Sable, the Tv Color, Takamaru, and a few other classic assist trophies as well

classics are the best to focus on. They don't get enough representation otherwise.

And maybe with the F-Zero stage people will start pestering Nintendo for a new F-Zero and the best racing franchise can be revived.
