Novice TO here:

A friend of mine and I got the bright idea of hosting an All-Star Versus tournament. Coming up with a functional ruleset has been a real endeavor.

Here is what we have so far:

- All-Star mode @ 8 minutes
- items set to off and none
- double elimination 4 stock best of 3 (finals are 4 stock best of 5)
- double blind character selection if requested
- no duplicate characters
- winner picks characters first in the next game
- bottom row is starters, middle row counterpicks

any comments or suggestions or praise?

Thanks a ton!

I dont like "bottom row is starters, middle row counterpicks" It just makes things super wierd.

I think you should let Sheik and Zelda transform. With Zelda being good now, the opponent being worried about a sheik transforming is actually something exciting to see, imo. It's an ingrained part of their gameplay, plus they'd lose an attack slot without it. On the other hand, transforming is really risky. I only really see it when sheik is recovering to the stage, and after that the player has to play as Zelda. Besides, they share the same stock, right? It's no different from playing a normal match. I would support a rule saying you can't have both Sheik and Zelda on your team, though.

I do like the Double blind picks and no duplicate characters. I'm not sure how I feel about not being able to use the same characters that I've won with. As long as it's a blind selection, then counterpick teambuilding becomes that much more strategic I think. Plus you'd have to be really good with at least 8 characters to win (not a bad thing, but for some reason it puts me off. How about the victor lets the loser see his team going in, like a normal set?).

Of course, these are just comments/suggestions, and I've been really looking forward to seeing top level All-star play :)

edit: I can forsee character selection taking forever, so I think you should implement something to shorten the time it takes to choose stages

To speed up character selection:

Everyone registers as their 'team' and has to use that team in their first game (let's be honest, most people will be sticking to the same team anyway)

A player may change ONE of their characters, OR change their order when counterpicking would normally occur.

e.g.

I could either take my original team of
(Samus, ToonLink, Ness, G&W)
and swap
e.g. (Samus, Toonlink, Falcon, G&W) keeping the rest of the order the same
or
keep the team and change their positions
e.g. (ToonLink, Samus, G&W, Ness)
