Alright so I searched through the snake forum and haven't found a thread completely dedicated to snake's grenade, so here goes.
Welcome to the grenade guide. What this covers is not snake's tilts, smashes, neutrals, aerials, or other specials, but focuses solely on his grenade. Why? This move is potentially one of Snake's most devastating moves.
Here's what we know so far.
*You can cook them as long as you want (hold onto them for a while by pressing and holding B).
*You have three different *official* trajectories of throwing it by tilting the control stick either forward, back, or leaving it neutral (You'll see why I say official later).
*When thrown, they damage your opponent, but have absolutely no knockback.
*Grenades blow up when they're hit.
*Shielding drops the grenade.
*After shielding, you can pick them up again by pressing A (not sure if anyone else knows this). This opens up a whole new branch of options.
*You can jump once while holding onto it the normal way, and twice by doing it the special way.
*You cannot air dodge while holding onto the grenade normally.
Now here's the fun part. I'll try to keep this neat.
The three official throwing trajectories are upward, diagonal, and straight forward. Cooking the grenade affects how soon it explodes after you throw it. Basic.
However, by shielding, Snake drops the grenade. Now, while we all know this, I don't know if many realize that they can pick it up again by pressing A. The game treats the grenade you pick up this way like a normal throwing item (unsure, but theoretically should work. must continue testing). This means that you can throw it straight up or use your b moves afterwards. Also, Snake regains his mobility and can do everything that doesn't require the A button (that throws the grenade). Also, since it's now a normal item, shielding won't make him drop it again meaning that, if you think you have the timing down, you can block, spot dodge, and let the grenade blow up while you're doing it.
While this may not be much different than the holding B down method, it still creates a new trajectory (upwards), allows snake to turn around, run, etc, and allows him to use his B moves. However, the normal method of cooking should not be overlooked. It has different throw trajectories and for obvious reasons, snake seems vulnerable in this state and tends to trigger people to attack him more often.
By simply holding onto the grenade, Snake has become a lot more difficult to approach. By not throwing, you create a "throw or explode" mind game; you may opt to throw the grenade later, or bait your attacker into striking and getting hit. It gives him a method to both get into the opponent and keep himself safe from people rushing in, and we all know that Snake needs some room.
Hopefully, this helps the prospective Snake players out there. Happy hunting. I'll try to update this when I find more stuff.
