Aerial recovery differences

So I'm sure we've all fallen to our death at least once by now because we tried to press Up to jump after being sent flying, only to find yourself continuously falling. It seems that the aerial recovery doesn't work the same in this game. Most of the time after being sent away, I can't do the recovery jump at all and only my "B + Up" recovery attack(and on fewer occasions, not even B-Up). But I've been looking everywhere for some info on this and I can't find it. What I want to know is what exactly determines whether or not your opponent, or you, are able to do either "up" or "B-Up" to recover. Because it would be nice to know when to jump off the stage and hit them really quick or something before they come back on, if it would mean they couldn't recover. I hope what I'm asking makes sense, and thank you for your time!

Many people play with tap to jump off, therefore most of us jump without pressing up.

I am not 100% sure what you are speaking of. The way you described it, it simply sounds as if you aren't keeping track of when you have used your double jump. If you use your double jump and get hit you need to touch the ground before you get it again of course, however this has been the case for every smash bros so this is nothing new.

This has actually been in every Smash game and I have no idea how to cause it on purpose. It happens to me almost routinely which is why I up+B as soon as I see that my character is still tumbling on descent. The dodge button snaps you out of it, too, I believe.

It seems as though you lost your double jump and couldn't get out of the helpless animation as a result.

Another possible explanation could be you turned off tap jump off, since pressing up to jump does not work there, only x or y allowing it.

Like everyone has mentioned, it seems you have lost your jump or used a move that doesn't allow you to do anything else after. In case you don't know these basics (everyone was once new to the game before) here are some (referring to only some of the cast):
  • After doing a double jump, you cannot do it again unless you grab the ledge or touch the floor (getting hit does not give you your double jump back).
  • Many moves make it so you cannot do any actions afterwards, leaving you in the helpless state. These include many Up-B's (Mario's Up-B), but not limited to Up-B's (C. Falcon's Side-B)
  • Many character can however, gain the ability to do their Up-B again if they get hit. Things like getting hit include Mario's back air. Certain things however, like Mario's cape, or a push (not hit) from Link's boomerang will not give you your Up-B back since you did not get "hit"

This is you accidentally jumping before being hit, thus your second jump was used up but you didn't know it. Tap jump is a killer.
