Smash Ace
I'm going to attend my first tournament with a friend of mine in a local video game store, but I've never been to any tournaments before, any suggestions?

Sadly, we have to use the provided controllers in order to "Keep it fair"First of all, have fun. Second of all bring a controller and make sure you keep track of it always. It's good to meet all the smashers in your area and develop a community. Some of my longest friendships started with smash!
So I got to the tournament and there was about 35 people attending, everyone had their own controllers like a REAL tournament should be. (including myself) I signed up and the hosts said that we had to do 3 stocks with 6 minutes due to how late it was.The tournament was ran like a real tournament should be, no items and tournament stages. It was alot of fun and out of 35 people I placed 3rd which was disappointing because I wanted to get 1st place but at the end of the day i got my experience and fun.To be blunt, you're going to a tournament ran by people who have no idea what they're doing. They might have the venue, and hell, they might have the organisational skills, but the fact of the matter is that there is virtually no chance that they have any idea of how tournaments for any video game work.
It's hard to give them the benefit of the doubt if they're forcing you to use their controllers. Not only is that never the case for any real tournament whatsoever, it's just ****ing gross.
You're most likely going to play free-for-all on whack stages with items on in some ****ty single-elimination format.
Not that you can't have fun.
It just won't be what the word "tournament" means around here.
