So in the new mario kart there is going to be a dlc Mercedes-themed car. While I personally don't mind it and actually think it's kinda cool, a lot of people were irritated, and I can see why. If nintendo keeps going this route, would you want to see any of this in smash bros.? And to what extent?

I mentioned in the "paid dlc" that I wouldn't mind having goku or naruto outfits for certain characters for example. It appeases the "goku 4 smash" fanboys (see pleasesakurai.tumblr.com) while still maintaining a sense of "purity" (i.e. not fully integrating non-video game characters as actual fighters)

Advergaming? Is that some sort of neologism within the game industry?

I'm gonna say no to advergaming as Smash 4 DLC. Two main reasons:

1) Sponsoring the Benz in MK8 comes from a car company. So it has to do with the main purpose of the game being driving. You could argue the same for the 7-11 furniture set in Animal Crossing: New Leaf for interior design.
2) I doubt Nintendo would just pull from another entertainment medium and weave it into the fabric of an amalgamated game universe. Other companies have done it to varying degrees. But the anime example you mentioned is highly subjective to everyone's tastes and would be irrelevant to all characters in the game. I doubt Sakurai and his directors care about appeasing fanboys either.

Lying about my country.
I don't give a **** as long as it doesn't mean obstrusive ad messages popping up everywhere like so many ****ty free to play games insist on doing, and I kinda don't see why anyone would. The Mercedes in MK is optional and you don't have to ever see it if you don't want to, and it's integrated seamlessly into the game, I'm cool with stuff like that.

The Mercedes Benz on Mario Kart is a car DLC on a car game, and it looks pretty darn cool. I don't know what you could have on Smash, maybe a skin for the Home-Run Bat with that baseball team Nintendo owns? Nothing really fits here.

John Cena for Sm4sh DLC, with the new items, Oxiclean and Slim-Jims, and a new stage, Coca-Cola factory.

My fingers hurt from typing such a horrible set of ideas...

I can see it now...

All will be background icons in the stages. I know this sounds crazy, but remember THIS?!:

And especially.....this:

That would be a better way to use it. Unintrusive, totally optional.

I'd rather it not happen, but I understand the business reasons behind it and wouldn't be opposed if they kept it subtle.

*Picture of stage 1-1 from Super Mario bros. covered in advertisements*
"Pic of the day. In Brawl, this stage had become a desert, but now, it's become industrialized! And with industrialization comes advertisements! Gee, I have a strange craving for an ice cold, refreshing can of coke right now. Perhaps it would help fill the empty void that I sometimes feel my life is while I'm making this game!"

Also, new F-Zero stage with each F-zero racer sponsoring a different company, and giant monitors in back that display real life commercials that are updated monthly? Hell, they should change Captain Falcon's outfit entirely to a Nascar esque-suit covered in advertisements, I mean it just makes sense. And what about Pokemon Stadium, if we get a new one? What's a stadium without advertisements? Nothing, nothing I tell you!

Come on guys the possibilities are endless!

Maybe an Everlast little Mac recolour or even an Everlast sandbag. (What other boxing/fighting brands are there?)

Does anyone even look forward to or request advergaming? Items such as the Mercedes GLA are a nice luxury because they are free and non-intrusive. Do you really want someone's favorite brand of soda to break the believability and aesthetics of your game world? It's a corporate tendril that's best used voluntarily.

Only if it fits within the game, you know what'd be cool? If the Boxing Ring stage had avertisements on the back for EVO, APEX, etc...

Honestly, there are some cool possibilities.

A new non-Michael Bay Ninja Turtles movie is coming out? 1-4 Ninja Turtles available for DLC.
Lots of anime possibilities (who have already been in games!).
Retro mascots that have had their own games - Cool Spot, Chester Cheetah, The Noid.
Fred Freakin' Flintstone.

Yeah, and 'lukewarm' is a good way to describe how I'd feel about any of those ideas right now - but if Nintendo ever confirmed they were going that direction, that's the sort of thing I'd like to see before having logos plastered over everything.

I thought Smash Brothers was already (but not purely) subliminal advertising for the various game characters and their series. Making people question what character or trophy comes from where, and making us interested in buying/playing those games to see what they're all about.

It's what happened with me and Olimar from Brawl. And now Pikmin is one of my favorite game series.

This gives me an idea for a hack pack on Brawl Vault - Project Merchandise :)

For your knowledge the word advergaming does exist and it has been a long term in Advertising, before even the SNES era it was a little more common at sometime it went lost because it was not used or common anymore, but you can still found examples in old and new games, NES game Yo Noid! (Domino's Pizza) and Metal Gear Solid 4 (Apple), if you are a person that likes to find details and other things in games you will see is more common than what you think, this is a person that studied a degree in Advertising.

You are right is common term in Advertising but I don´t know if is common in the video game industry.
