So, I've finally played through all 4 current releases (outside of Japan) of the Ace Attorney series, the 3 Phoenix Wrights and Apollo Justice. I didn't have the chance to get my hands on them all until very recently, so I've excessively played through the games in the last few weeks.
While I have to say that I wasn't too fond of Apollo Justice, it still was a great game. I guess disliking the main character wasn't a too great help. Haha.
The first 3 games, however, are epic on a whole different level. After playing through all of them, I think I can say that those were the most interesting, fun, and exciting games I've played for a very long while.
The idea itself isn't really new, but it hasn't been used much, and I'm glad Capcom took onto it, as it turned out very well. My first game was the second, Justice for All, so I was a little spoilered after finishing it because I wanted to look up on some questions I got from not playing the first. After I got the other games (right after finishing the replaying of JFA), I started with the first game. The I played Apollo Justice to keep the one that is supposed to be the best for the very end, and it really does live up to that title.
Phoenix Wright is amazing. And there's several reasons why it is. First of all, it's, of course, the unique style. The characters are quirky, almost to the overexaggeration (such as the gay chef in the third game), but yet very well done. The games are full of humour and silliness, especially considering more than half of it takes place in court. I think that's a major part of the series' success - they make something boring as trials funny and exciting. Which is really awesome.
Secondly, I think the whole variety of characters is amazing. We have silly characters like Maya Fey, Gumshoe or several witnesses (Jean Armstrong, Lotta Hart, Wesley Stickler) and some very serious or dark personalities (Dahlia Hawthorne, Manfred von Karma, Godot, Kristoph Gavin). This makes pretty much everyone find themselves a favourite one easily. Additionally to this, the games do so much with these characters that you really get to love them. The characters with more dark background are very well executed and normally not overly "emo", as one would say these days. Even the angstier characters have their lovable sides.
The cases themselves are always very well written, even the more boring ones, which usually are the first ones of each game. That's another thing. I really love the plotlines of every single case - except for the circus one in JFA, lawls.
Of course, the music does its whole part, too. Reaching from cheery over exciting to sad or dark, everything is represented, and extremely well composed. There's almost no music track in the series I don't enjoy throughout. It always underlines the situation or character it represents perfectly.
Last, but not least, there's the plot (of the first three games, that is). After playing the first two games, there's several unanswered questions, which the third game answers. The whole plotlines involving several recurring characters, mainly the Fey family members, are extremely interesting, and after beating the third game, Trials & Tribulations... ZVARRI! The truth has once again been elegantly revealed!
Almost all questions have been answered. Pretty much all lose ends have been tied together to a carpet of confusing yet exciting story.
Overall, I'd say that the Ace Attorney series has in the duration of only one month become my overall favourite game series, without a doubt. It overtook Smash and Castlevania, and stole their shared throne. The games are so amazing and interesting, despite their linearity (which really is the only main gripe I have... you have to present in some cases one exact piece of evidence where you just have to save and retry and retry and retry again until you find the correct one <.<).
So, there's to hope Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations will be a very good sequel and worthy to be part of the series.
