Here's the scenario:
It's 2012, and Sakurai has suddenly announced he will be retiring from game development due to a stress-related nervous breakdown. You're the next in line prospect to design Sm4sh, and Sakurai has given you his blessing to take the reigns. His last wish as a game developer was that you deliver the greatest troll in the history of the series, and you need to make him proud. Specifically, he wants you to form the biggest roster so far. The catch? You need to outright replace one of the original eight characters: Mario, Link, Pikachu, DK, Yoshi, Fox, Kirby or Samus.
The trailer for this character will feature the character you chose to cut and the character you replaced him/her with. Kinda like the Lucina and Robin reveal trailer where Chrom says he'll have to get his chance another time, and won't be playable.
Which character would you replace, and who would replace him/her?
I'd replace Pikachu with Squirtle. Pikachu was the mascot for the show, and sold the most merch, but Smash is about the original games and not the peripheral stuff. It's why you don't see Captain N hanging around.
For a lot of us, Squirtle was the first Pokemon we ever saw in action. Squirtle was our loyal companion from day 1, and Blastoise carried our team all the way to the elite four. Pikachu was primarily a mascot who wasn't willing to lay it all on the line for us when we needed it. I picked Charmander myself, but a lot of my buddies went with that little turtle and so did many others. As a nod to the show, he could get some Squirtle Squad alts with the sunglasses. I'd say Pikachu could make it in as a Pokeball Pokemon, but seeing as he's too much of a special snowflake to go in one, I guess he'd be stuck as a trophy
