A stupid nub problem

I don't really know what kind of advice you guys can give me, but here goes:

I can't tilt.

I don't know what it is, whenever I try to get off the f-tilt or u-tilt (which are amazing by the way), more than half the time a smash comes out instead. And you all know how slow his f-smash is, so its a bit of a problem. Is this just some stupid timing problem that I'm having that I need to practice? Or does this happen to other people?

btw, I never played Melee and I only played the origional casually, so it might just be a lack of experience. I want to play more competitavely, and am trying to pick up Snake as a secondary. I normally play MK or Toon Link, so if a smash goes out instead, it's never really a problem in those cases.

Anyway, advice or ridicule is thanked in advance!

Well you can't do a smash or jump while holding a direction when you're in the middle of an attack. Also, smashes are when you SMASH the joystick. You can't do a smash when you tilt it a tiny bit, not all the way to the edge, but like, halfway there.

Set your contoller's c-stick to attacks and not smashes. Thats if your using a gamecube controller. Also, you will get the hang of it with time.

I'm actually using the Wiimote/nunchuck setup with d-pad set to smashes (what my friends like to call c-padding), which works fine for other characters. However, setting d-pad to attack just acts like an A button, and doesn't attack in the direction you press.
