A *REAL* Wi-Fi topic.

Bleh, figures I want to make this thread when a recent Wi-Fi topic was made by a rather arrogant person.

Anyways, the main point of this topic is that I want to know why everyone is bashing Wi-Fi so bad for Brawl?

I played, and still do play Mario Striker's Charged on the Wii, over Wi-Fi, and there's no lag, as long as you don't connect to someone that has a miserable connection, which you get to choose.

MSC(Mario Striker's Charged) has a system where it will search for players, the nearest one found, it will judge their connection on a 4 star rating, 4 being the best, 1 being the worst, and then you get to accept or deny them, and vice versa.

If they implement this into Brawl, do you REALLY think it will be that "bad" of an experience to play over Wi-Fi?

I know Sakurai said it might be a little laggy, but that's a rather vague idea.. It should only lag cross-country, and to the extremes, other countries, which there is a chance won't even be compatible to play against, since they may be different versions, as in MSC's case.

So really, why the bashing on the Brawl's Wi-Fi ability?

1) Lag won't be a problem.
2) People on average have good enough internet that they can support a game like this. It's not Halo 3 with 16 people and hundreds of bullets requiring collision detection for everything.
3) Play Smash64 online like I have, the rare lag doesn't affect gameplay AT ALL. It's only the crazy lag that seriously screws up the gameplay.

Also, I had a 32 kb/s dl speed a few months ago. I could play Halo 2 online PERFECTLY. As long as you have at least a 32 kb/s dl speed, Brawl should have no problems.

If you want a more reliable number than 32 kb/s dl speed. I did the speedtest.net thingy and my dl speed for that was 281 iirc.

I think WiFi on Brawl will be great, though I did get some laggyness on Super Mario Strikers, its was probably just my own dumb connection, it only happened like once or twice, then it was fine. >_>
Anyway, we could always post our Brawl numbers online and play other people who are around your own skill level and maybe closer to you if it lags.

The laggyness on MSC is usually due to other people ****ing with their connection to gain an unfair advantage, which I really hope that Brawl will make some anti-connection tweak, like if a sudden lag spike happens, remove the player causing it, or something.

It's probably because it's one less thing that the connection has to constantly transfer.. Less problems, and of course you get to talk smack while taunting. =]]

The only irk I have with Brawl's WiFi is that you can't see other people's names. I just don't understand why this would be removed after it worked out fine for Mario Kart and Metroid.
If you came across someone you recognized, you might know about their style of play, possibly giving you an advantage. I know that seems like a stretch, but I believe it is the reason that was given on the dojo.

Lag/names don't really bother me, but I'm worried that Nintendo might decide to use that "random search" crap again for finding opponents instead of making it server-based like online games should be. I'm also worried that online might be really limited and we won't be able to customize our matches (turn off items, choose between time/stock matches, etc.)

Nintendo's already shown us that they suck at making online games. Let' s hope they get it right this time.

I've played FPS so much I've become spoiled, there is no way in hell that Nintendo could meet all the demands I have for Wifi.
I suppose I can live with it, its better than fighting lvl. 9s .

WiFi will by no means be perfect at all. Lag will continue to exist.

Thankfully though, lag is usually the problem that isn't the game's fault. You might be playing someone that's far away, or has an erratic connection and can't do much about it. It can be annoying, but this is the kind of thing Friend Codes can help with. I never played Melee with anyone in my life, but I intend to share my FC with the guys in the Oklahoma thread.

Maybe I'm overestimating lag potential for WiFi. It's just that after playing Gunz: The Duel for so long, there's always someone you come across each day that you have a high ping with, and even though I have gotten used to it, there are thousands that whine when they meet someone with high ping or spikes.

So basically: I'm prepared for the worst.

It'll be like any online game if you get someone with a god awful connection then they game is going to go slow and lag if they have a good connection you'll be good to go.

that was from my house in southern california to a server in washington DC. im not 100% sure what this means but judging from my ping id say id have small ammounts of lag at most when playing with these people.

then i got those results downloading from a server about an hour away from me in Los angeles. i probly wont experience any lag with these people.

98 ms sounds about right, because people tend to start complaining about lag when the ping is above 100 ms.
