No offense to Reno and his acquaintances, but I'd rather they have been wrong.
Sure, their reputations would go straight to heck, but their ruin would probably well worth a different and hopefully better roster and several hundred thousand, if not a million, happier players.
Nonetheless, they were right, I was wrong, and at this point, there is nothing to be gained by shooting the messenger, no matter how grim their message was.
As we all know, Super Smash Bros Brawl is to be the last entry in the series directed by good old Sakurai himself. Quite possibly, the only reason why the series became so popular was the premise: classic Nintendo characters beating the stuffing out of each other. The characters were what attracted people to Smash in the first place, that is why the roster is held to be so important, everyone dreams of playing as their own favorite Nintendo character in future Smash games. To say characters do not matter is to ignore why players were drawn to the series in the first place, it's to ignore what really gives this game a certain appeal and soul.
"There will be more characters than you can possibly imagine!"
"I don't know kid, I can imagine quite a lot."
To be quite honest though, it wasn't the number of characters that bothered me, it was the characters who were filling the remaining slots.
Let's start with perhaps the biggest disappointment of the roster: Ganondorf
"LOL Sakurai, srsly tho, WTF?"
Giving Ganondorf Captain Falcon's moves made little sense then, and it makes less sense now. Sure, at least he's been Luigified, but with all the material from the games, Sakurai and co. couldn't make an original move set? For god's sake, give him a blasted sword!
Honestly, this is probably the single biggest mistake I've seen Sakurai make yet, and with two years of development time, it's extremely odd that such an important and popular character was not fully decloned.
To be quite honest, I'd trade WW Link, Wolf and Falco for a wholly original Ganondorf move set.
Just wow, Sakurai, just freaking wow.
"And his cousin?"
"He's a Landmaster, too, sir."
"How many Landmasters do we got on this roster, anyhow?"
"HO!"
"I knew it! I'm surrounded by Landmasters!"
With the introduction of Wolf, cloning has been brought to another level of suck.
Three freaking characters with the same freaking moveset, just how lazy can you get?
I'd trade two, (it should be obvious which ones) for one original character.
In fact, in the time that it took to make those two characters playable and balanced, they probably could of made one fully original move set, a pity.
"ROB: Hey, at least he has jet boots."
Now for ROB.
ROB is supposed to be this installment's WTF character, like Game and Watch was for Melee, and like what Ness was for the original.
There's only one problem: Outside of his awesome jet-boot recovery, ROB looks to be about as fun to play as when he was a crappy peripheral.
Now, I know that ROB helped Nintendo get into the market after the crash, but do we really need him as a character? Hell, Sakurai seems to perfectly content to put the likes of Little Mac and Stafy as AT characters when they could of made great playable characters, shouldn't being an enemy and having a significant part in the SSE story be enough for ROB?
Honestly, Sakurai could of done so much better for the WTF character. Mach Rider would of fit the role perfectly, and he would of been pretty cool to boot.
What say you?
