what is it that makes DACUS possible? and more specifically what only makes DACUS possible? but not a down smash or forward/ reversed forward smash cancel-able from a dash attack with a sliding effect?

DACUS is basically shortening the length of your dash attack and canceling it into a up smash: Dash Attack Canceled Up Smash. It's a brawl technique that gives characters an additional boost in distance to their up smash.

It's tricky to do, but basically in the first few frames of your dash attack you move the stick from the side immediately up while pressing grab simultaneously. It's not that hard once you get used to it, one of the ATs I recently figured out how to do, along with l-canceling and teching.

EDIT: Whoops, misread your post. Yeah, it's curious why I can't cancel into a downsmash with it, Roy would immediately be top tier if it was possible. Hopefully a Brawl code expert can fill you in.

The frame window for performing a DACUS is even slighty bigger when you trigger it with the Attack-Button instead of a Grab, meaning it is somewhat easier to execute.
As a Lucas-Main it is dramatic to miss a DACUS buffered with a grab (slow tether endlag, instant punish from the enemy), which is why I changed the Z-Button to Attack and Grab to the X-Button.

To your actual question, why the DACUS works as it is...
You might want to ask this in the Brawl section, since it is a technique found out in Brawl.
Or wait until someone with knowledge of framedata or such kind answers :b
