Does anybody know how the game connects to other players? If it's through Japanese servers it's not too surprising there are lag issues.

Does this mean when it comes out in the US the problem will be mostly gone or does it mean that there will just be those matches every now and then that are slideshows?

Also, I have heard that the local wireless is laggy and is thought to be wireless interference. If this is true does this mean that local connections at tournaments and conventions will not work out or does it just mean they'll have to do it through online?

1) It goes through Nintendo's servers. This is why they were able to shut down Wii and DS servers, haha.

2) There's no confirmation that there will be any additional servers than what the reviewers have been using. I assume after the Pokebank disaster, Nintendo is overkilling it for this huge release, though.

3) 3DS local connections are still WiFi. The "Host" system becomes a hotspot, and the "Join" users connect to it. If there's wireless interference affecting connectivity, it will affect local connections the same way.

From what i understand, servers are only used for matchmaking, and actual game play is hosted, so one player hosts it on their home internet and someone else connects to it.

This is true, yes. I'll write up a post on how to get the best connection in another thread later. Router tutorial, tips, tricks, etc.
With the Wii it was just "buy an ethernet adapter" haha
