Good day fellow smashers, today I wanted to discuss a vital part of our play that some of us may be lacking. Without this resource, many of use would be stuck at a wall, unable to learn the deeper parts of this game. Without this resource, most of our AT's become unnecessary. I'm talking about, of course, Other Smashers.

I've seen quite a few posts talking about this, and so I wanted to have a place for us to discuss issues with getting smashers together. I know that larger states have no problem with getting monthly tourneys together, but in more rural areas with limited players, I find that having other people to play against is a rare resource that I struggle to obtain more of.

Especially if you rely on casual smash players to get your practice with.

Sometimes I feel like I can't ask my main smasher friend to play, because I fear they will get sick of the game from me badgering them to play too much. I guess I'm at the point where I'm kinda a smash maniac and I only have casual players around me.
How do you guys deal with keeping smash relevant within your training group? Have you ever had to deal with a burnt out training partner? Have you ever chosen not to use your main just so that your opponent won't get frustrated and stop playing?

I don't want to run out of people to play smash with D:

Find a Facebook group online where you guys can chat and meet up.
Go to a tourny and find someone who lives near by
Play online *eek!*
Better yet, train your friend to get better or at the very least show them the ins and out on how to get better.

I know how you feel, being rather obsessed with the game myself, as I can always be found at my school's game club, where PM is on 24/7. I find there isn't really a solution to spice it up for people immediately - when they get frustrated, I think it's best to just back down and let them play with others of their level. Everybody enjoys winning. Sometimes I feel like some regulars get tired of being bopped, but once I leave and they're the ones dominating the place, their energy usually comes back.

Of course, it's best practice-wise if you can find players of your level or better in your area. It might be intimidating if you don't know them at first, but you have to remember they love the game as much as you do and probably won't turn down more people to play and practice with.

In my duo, I'm almost always the one who ends up getting burnt out. I'm a bit of a defeatist who has trouble staying confident and positive. That, and everyone who knows me IRL knows that I have a tendency to get bored of things very quickly.

In regards to finding other players, I'm blessed that one of my closest friends is a Smash player (a much better and more committed one than I am at that), but nonetheless, Australia has always had an issue with the size of its Smash scenes as of my understanding. Given Project M's lack of popularity in comparison to Brawl and Melee, it only gets worse. Once again, I'm lucky to be in one of the two biggest states population wise, but even then most players live in Melbourne, which I'm quite the distance from.

TL;DR - My vote goes in "Sort of"

I would love to do either of the first two. However, where I live doesn't have those kinds of groups or tournaments. (Trust me, I have scoured the inter webs.) (I'm also the only one posting in my region in the regional boards. East cost canada is rough.)

The training my friend to get better is what I'm trying to do, but they don't have the same passion for the game that I do and it's pretty noticeable. I just don't feel good kicking them around for hours and hours every few nights. I feel like as fast as they are improving, I'm also improving and thus they will always be frustrated with losing.

And yeah. I should get around to playing online. Is the lag as bad as the rumours make it out to be?

By EC Canada, do you mean like P.E.I/labrador and these parts?

Because Quebec has a pretty established scene.

Online is alright if you can play someone close enough, though few of the skills you develop there will carry over to actual play because of the minimum 7 frame delay.

Yes. This definately happens to me. I am in a place where there is no one but casuals anywhere near me but I do play online quite a bit. I don't get much lag and I feel like I am most definitely improving. The only person close to being a non casual around here is my brother but he is still a casual that occationally has enough drive to fight me but because of me playing online and improving so quickly (compared to me only improving when playing him and leaving big gaps so I get worse before he fights me again) he doesn't hardly ever want to actually play me anymore... :L Sadly I also don't have a Facebook. Yeah, Prince Edward Island. Nobody here. :(
I guess I will look into some netplay stuff.
