I've gotten back into smash bros. 64. Or rather, getting into it for the first time. I really only played it back when I was a kid and I did the same 2 moves :D .

But recently I've been getting... a little annoyed at brawls defensiveness. I don't know of anybody immediately around me that plays melee, so I turned back to smash bros. 64 . I've been playing online for the past couple of days... and it's FANTASTIC. I admit I don't like the 0-death / really powerful combos, but still.

I'm just amazed at how fun and great this game was. I mean I love melee (can't really play it with anybody though), and I really like brawl; but in brawl playing somebody who's good at being "campy" it's just not quite as fun (although it still can be really fun).

Has anybody had a similar experience coming back to this game? Or are all of you veterans who've been here since the beginning? :p

Yup, this is pretty much what I did. I played the game as a kid, never seriously. Then when all the hype started building up around Brawl before its release, I picked it up again and starting learning more about it. It's still tons of fun and EVERYONE has played it at some point in their lives so there's always people to face off against... unfortunately good SSB64 players are harder to find in real life... So thankfully, we have online play! The P2P is better than Brawl online and Melee unfortunately has no online options at all. This game never gets old!

I like them even when I CAN'T do them.

Good opportunity to practice broken keyboard DI. For some reason it doesn't seem so broken. <_<

Good choice brother. Smash 64 is the best, most balanced, more tactical smash game in the series. Melee and brawl are still fun and everything... but smash 64 is just to much fun. I would put Melee as the second best..... Melee still pwns... and brawl has got neat stuff to just fool around on... anyways have fun playing 64 smash.

It's much more noticeable how flawed it is when you improve.

Do I notice? Not until it hits past 4 frames [I think 8 is the magic number], but since people who are better seem to notice 4, I can say it with certainty. :p

The controller stuff though is obvious to notice.

Whoever doesn't love 64 is on crack. I have done 0-deaths like twice, but man did it feel good. Other than that, it's just an excellent game that is imo highly under-appreciated. I just wish more people got into it irl. I've been trying to get people in Chicago to like it more, but they are more of a Melee crowd. Oh well Melee is fun too, it's better than Brawl.

Go away Dair, you quit remember ;)
I got into SSB64 a while ago...heh. Same basic procedure though. I'm pretty sure nobody figured it out the first time they played it through usually come back to it when they realize there's a more competitive scene than they knew about the first time they played.
...That sentence was rather long, but I'm far to lazy to change it ~_~

It was on the offical site. You could try a web archive to look for it, but the JScript is broken.

http://web.archive.org/web/20010720201524/http://smashbros.com/

If only I can find the loose page or all the files associated with it.

EDIT: Finding it...wait....

Edit2: Finding it...
http://web.archive.org/web/20010207191909/smashbros.com/smash_tactics.html

Techniques are listed like

http://web.archive.org/web/20010207210527/smashbros.com/tips_x.html

x is a number from 02 to 44 [two digit]. Look at Page Source on Smash Tactics for the page.

EDIT3:
Wrong list, one of the stuff here I think:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010208084711/http://smashbros.com/moves_intro.html

EDIT4:
Z-Cancel: http://web.archive.org/web/20001008112426/smashbros.com/moves_advattacklanding.html

Hehehehe.

DI saved smash.

If smash had no DI and had z-cancel, it would be just chaotic.
For sure man lol, I woulda thrown my controller at the screen (had a pc pad the first time i played online) the first times i played 64 online. All my smash experience came from playing melee. But I really discovered 64 is SO different you can't even compare. Really helped me that the first ppl I played were guys like Sheermadness, Boom, Quickman, Johnny, Sensei, and Malva all back when they were more active. XD
