A history question regarding leaks

So I'm sure we can all agree the board's been inundated with leaks and "prophecy" and whatnot. Now, I wasn't really knowledgeable enough about games back in 2001 when Melee was released to be following the proceedings, but I recently read that its roster was leaked (and met with a decided amount of flak)...does anyone know what the source of that leak was? I'm curious - I'd like to see how the situation parallels the current one.

There's a thread by Chronobound about this. I believe the original leaker was named "othersteve." I'd recommend checking Cronobound's topic to get the rest of the story.

From what I remember, it was a guy outside of Japan (I'm pretty sure) and he managed to import a copy about a week early. He posted pictures of the roaster screen, which no one believed due to the appearance of game and watch, several characters (particularly marth and roy) that no one heard of, and the alignment of the boxes.

Found it. Thanks much.

...checking out the link to the IGN thread where the roster got leaked, and it's pretty amusing. People were a lot nicer about the whole thing then, it seems. Then again, the leaker seems a lot more forthcoming with what he knew.
