A fox with no WD

Recently My Boyfriend ( idfection here on SB) Got me into playing melee. I've been playing for about a year and a half now but not very consistantly.
I use fox and Can hold my own well in one on ones and can keep from looking incompetent in groups.

I've read several FAQs and help threads for Fox and they all focus on Wave dashing.

I DO NOT wave dash. I know it is a valuable asset and if you cant wave dash you are a n00b.
But I'm not in Melee to play competitively. I just want tips to keep up with my friends and occationally amaze them. X3

but I strongly dislike the physics of wding with the way I play Fox. I'm a smash heavy and shine heavy player. I can shinespike who ever I'm playing about half the time and I'm good at getting others over the edge. As far as computer levels go ( I know computers are irrelevent after a while) I can take on a single or a pair of 9's with a bit of effort, but I have a great deal of struggle taking on 3 of them.

I was just looking to see if there were any tips on playing a non-wding Fox.
Tips, combos, or anything else would be of great help, thank you.

the non-wavedashing fox should focus on dash-dancing, usually leading to jump-canceled up-throw to up-air. That is essentially what you need. If you must be smash happy, you should at least be smart about it. Jabs to smashes, tech-chase to up-smash and such should be added to gameplay. And learn to l-cancel, with these techniques you should be able make do without wavedashing. You could also check out a japanese fox player named masashi, he focuses on smarter gameplay rather than technique.

Thank you very much.
I'll work on improving my L-canceling and start tech-chasing.

I'll check out Masashi and try and learn some more tips on Jump-cancelled grabs.
thanks!

If you have any other advice, escpecially vs. Falcon or Link , lol, I'm all ears. X3

Hey mister, she doesn't wavedash, so she can't waveshine, duh~

Anyway, like the other guy said, watch masashi. He rarely wavedashes, and plays really smart. Uh, I guess try hitting in that uptilt. This works as a good setup move, and can combo falcon, and a few other fast falling characters. It's pretty good against Link too. If you get L-canceling down, practice to shuffl. Shl and shdl is pretty effective too.

A fox can be played pretty well without wavedashing, so it shouldn't matter too much on who to watch.

Make good use of the Falco Stopper. It works decently on any character, and of course wonderfully on Falco. In case you don't know what it is, it's jull-jumping nairs, then fastfalling and L-cancelling them into a shine, repeat. No wavedashing involved. Learn to shffl perfectly, as it'll do you much good.

As a personal touch (something that I do myself), maybe try to use the SHL to turn around. It's A LOT faster, and you can even tack on a bit of damage whilst turning. Make good use Fox's jab. Use it to combo into smashes and grabs.

I have no doubt in my mind that your Fox can be as good as anyone elses.

Practice L-canceling, Short Hopping, and Fast Falling-->SHFFL Aerials (short hopped, fastfalled). This way, you can perform your aerial moves much faster and chain them into combos. Eventhough wavedashing is the most well known advanced technique, it's not the most important one :p

Guys, whatever happened to up throw -> up aerial? Isn't that Fox 101? You can do surprisingly well if you focus on dashdancing, grabbing (to up throw to up aerial), and Fox's basic ground game - incorporating up smash, down tilt, jab, sidestep, shield and grab. No advanced techniques needed (though drillshine helps, and is pretty easy).

Edit: whoops, didn't read the first reply. There we go.

i wish i could say waveshining was easy XD. But i like to do a lot of running shbairs and especially uairs to pop them up. Another good juggle tactic is too dash attack into an uptilt and then uair.

Running short hop bairs? Now isn't that a little hard to put in? They have to be chasing you then, which doesn't happen too often. Another thing is that shorthop fairs are better, if the opponent is in front of you, most of the time.

Oh yeah. Something that might catch the opponent off guard might be to full hop fast fall upair. Fhuffl. I made that up just now, but anyway, I find a fhuffl'd upair is more effective most of the time, rather than a shuffl'd one.

You have no objection to jumping out of shine? It's pretty easy to do once you get in the habit, and is almost as good as waveshine comboing.

Anyway, Fox isn't my main, but something I've been messing around with is the B-air. Good to SH into someone or through someone, facing towards them (not away), or you can full hop fastfall and land behind them pretty safely. Do everything else in this thread too, and remember the most important thing is to mix it up, and take advantage of opportunity.

Screw you.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but does not Makenshi also play without WD? <.<

Anyways, master everything except Wavedash. Sorry for such a short reply, I'm writing this on a cellphone. >,<

Thanks to every one. *sweatdrop* I've got a lot to practice on lol Especially my SH
And It seems I analyzed myself wrong...Idfection says I'm more Tilt heavy than smash heavy >-<
So maybe I'm a little better off. I'll check out Masashi and Makenshi and see what I can learn.

@ techno: actualyl I tend to Jump out of shine alot to get out nasty situations with Falcon lol But now I know I can put it to better use!

@ Gustav: Pretty much yes, it is a style problem. I really like my Fox to be reflexive and I Dont really like the feeling of the WD. It makes me nervous and it slows my Fox down. Maybe that means I'm a bad player, and maybe I'll pick it up one day when I get better, but for the moment I just want to improve and have FUN.

@White: GreenFox > Blue Fox X3

Again thank you all for being so kind!

Now, we ask of you pics! Pictures of you now!

Kidding. OG Fox ftw. Wavedashing is fun. Or rather, advanced techs makes it have more variety, making it filled with fun and deliciousness, imo.

SHFFL Dairs to wave shines are too fun not to think about!

but yeah, fox hardly needs a wavedash, so his game shouldn't change much in a match without it. I usually just stick with SHFFL's and up throw to Uairs anyways..... or Dair to whatever (hard to escape).
