A fix to balance issues in tournaments

Why don't we just divide up tournaments into character tiers so that each tournament has a specific tier that you are allowed to play as (and any character in a lower tier)? So like one tournament could have all A tiers and below (everyone) and another could have all B tier and below, and so on. That way tournaments can be played without always having to pick the top characters.

Mid and Low-Tier tournaments have been side events in many large events.
They are fun and refreshing to watch and play, but can not be considered standard, or make every TO to host them

This is how Pokemon works in most cases other than the officials. The problem with doing it in Smash is that there isn't as many characters as Pokemon and the community is drastically different. I am quite interested in this idea, as I have played competitive Pokemon in the past several times. I personally do not think it will make it to be standard though :/

Pokemon makes sense, its a game based off of turns where the outcome is for the most part predicted and stat based so a bottom tier Pokemon is just not going to beat a high tier Pokemon in a normal setting. With a fighting game however, it is possible to beat high tiers with low tiers if the player is significantly better or the match up says otherwise. As far as separating, I'd say no, but little side tournaments like low tier tournaments are fun on the side.

Besides, taking out characters change the tier lists because many fighting game lists are based off of how well their match ups are. Take out some characters and the tier list changes. And then you debate about who is supposed to be in A or B or C.

Edit: Oh and game is not that bad as far as balance and blah blah early blah blah blah :]

On a side note: they tried doing something like this in MvC3 on the side by giving each character points based on their rank and your team could not exceed a certain number of points. Was a really interesting idea at the moment. Your idea is interesting too, I just don't see it with this game as of right now.

Low tier mvc2 was always super fun but the difference between a high tier mvc2 character and a bottom tier is nearly insurmountable, smash has so many general skill aspects that a tourney player rocking gannandorf who's playing out of his mind could absolutely stomp someone playing MK... Is it common, no but you will almost never see that in games with bigger gulfs in tiers.

Fun idea, needed for the game to have a healthy competitive scene? Not a shot.

Tires don exist.
In all seriousness, the character balance issues this game has are pretty small compared to previous games, so it's not that big a deal if low tier tourneys aren't all that common in this game. They might well be limited to only being held at big tourneys, but low tiers in Smash 4 look right now to be good enough to win in most smaller events anyways, so it's not a big deal.

As it stands, I don't think that's necessary. Game is probably the most balanced Smash so far and the perceived "bad" characters are still somewhat viable or possible counter-picks, or just not explored enough.
