A bit of a rant for the Smash Community

If this needs to be moved elsewhere, please move it to the appropriate forum.

In episode 16 of The Flash, Cisco is invited by his parents to the birthday party of his brother, Dante. Dante was a musical prodigy who played in Carnegie Hall when he was 13 years old. His parents constantly dote on him for this to the point that they failed to realize that he hasn't accomplished anything in his life, musically or academically since and they constantly give him a free ride through life. They also failed to realize that their other son is a genius inventor working at one of the most prestigious labs in the nation and consistently ignored his accomplishments. They failed to realize Cisco's potential and missed his growth entirely for a past memory.

I bring this up because Dante is Melee, and Cisco is WiiU. The Smash community refuse to let Smash 4 grow as a game and are already hoping to see it fail before it even begins. It's a little sad when a new high profile fighting game doesn't get to have it's EVO grand finals on Sunday. But is instead shoehorned somewhere on Saturday alongside other streams. We can't even be bothered to give it its time in the limelight where all eyes have to be on it. But instead we're giving that to its big brother, Melee.

Some common complaints I hear regarding the WiiU is that people don't know how to set the rules. 2 stocks BO3, 3 stocks BO3, customs on/off. And instead of taking time so that conditions can properly be set. It's not like communities raised the number of matches in a set two years after the game launched, oh wait UMVC3 did when they felt matches were too short.

Another propblem I hear is the nature of God tier characters like DIddy Kong was a few months ago. Now I personally, felt anyone in this roster to be too ridiculously strong, some are a bit too weak though. But again instead of letting match ups and counter be found we just immediatly requested a character ban. Again the Marvel community faced a similar problem in their first year. Wesker was slated to be the God tier of the game thanks to him essentially having LV4 X Factor, but since everyone started playing him players found ways to counter Wesker to the point that for a good while Wesker was demoted to B Tier.

Now before I wrap this up, I know you're probably think "Well who are you to talk". I've been a fan of competitive fighting games for more than 5 years. I've watched the communities of Marvel, Street Fighter 4, ArcSys, Namco, and Netherealm games. But in all of those they never let the past version of a game over shine what was being played NOW. 3rd Strike is one of the best fighting games of all time but the SF community isn't abandoning Ultra 4. Marvel 2 fans waited 10 years for a sequel and when it FINALLY came out, they quickly adjusted to it and embraced it since. If all of these other communities can grow with time, why can't we.

Comment or counter argue below.

I am not so keen on watching Smash 4 and I don't really enjoy playing it either. It's fun and I have won some small tournaments (In dollars, then I've made about 182 dollars just because of smash 4). I like the game. But melee is on a whole higher level. I have been engaged in competitive smash since 2000 ( I started with 64). Melee means so much too me. It has helped me through some dark times and I love the smash community as a whole. I will never prefer Smash 4 over melee. It makes me sad to see so much flame wars over what smash game is the best. We are smash. We started as a silly little party game to then later become one of the most talked about games in the world. Melee has changed so much, I am happy that smash 4 exists. I am happy that their are people that play smash 4. Will I play more smash 4 then melee? No. Will I stop playing Smash 4 just because I like melee a lot more? No. Will I harass people that like smash 4 more than melee? No. Smash 4 is smash 4 and melee is melee. I like 64, I like melee, I (Kinda) like brawl, I like project m, and I like smash 4. I love smash.

Well smash 4 deserves it because all the game is is brawl 2.0 a brawl with faster moves and no tripping all smash 4 tech was in brawl nothing from melee
And we all know smash 5 will be brawl 3.0 so why play a game that will not be played its on the same path as brawl because it is just faster brawl

A movement should be started called "I love smash." The goal of this movement should be to erase any hate of a smash game in particular or at least help smash players to tolerate other smash games.

It is fine if you like melee, pm, or n64, but I like smash. To be specific I like the smash series.

(Yet you left Brawl off that list)

Anyways, I like the idea of just supporting all Smash games equally.

Funny that you mention that I left brawl out. I actually love brawl and started out in that competitive scene. Thanks for the critique though I'll keep it in mind.

Every game has its own merit. Even the black sheep like 64 and Brawl have their place.

The game will develop in its own time, at its own pace. You can't force competition.

It was just an irony point, I assumed you'd probably like Brawl given the rest of your post.

But yea, good goals. Gonna be hard to convince people to follow 'em, though.

I honestly don't see why people claim that ONLY melee is truly competitive/takes any skill to play. It doesn't matter if sm4sh doesn't feature tech skill like melee (perf pivoting is probably the closest we'll get), because skill is still 100% required to win. The same applies to any game where the opponents are given the same resources: because only the most skilled player wins. Imagine a smash game with just a single, basic attack, and the ability to jump. No aerials, no smash attacks or spikes, just a single jab and the ability to move / jump. It would be boring as hell, but still only the best player would win. Very rarely do smash results just come down to luck (even if random elements are involved like tripping in Brawl). Isai hasn't just been consistently lucky in 64, and neither has ZeRo in sm4sh, they're simply the best players at this time. Melee will always be my fave Smash game, but I respect every entry & its players.

The Melee elitists are what make the community look bad. Why not just like Smash in general and accept that Melee and Sm4sh can coexist.

You do realize that Smash-4 isn't near Melee, right? I'm not an "elite" person towards or Melee Brawl. I support every-game but Smash-4 and it's obvious why. First and for most there are merits to each game and as many refer to as "hype" given the stance that Melee had so many honorable moments, brought out old "bad" characters in 2006 and debating if that character or characters are bad; in 2014 Yoshi is now seen good, DK is getting there and the meta-game will continue to evolve no matter what. Melee has everything and I mean everything even online play which is not that great in my opinion that is why Melee is seen superior and must accept that.

Brawl, another game that had many moments and in my opinion the only game that brought almost all of the Brawl roaster to their full potential. Brawl as well had moments and I mean "hype" moments very energetic and exciting to watch and be a part of. As well Brawl has even been re-engineered to become a Melee mod known as (Project M) because the game is loved that much that people just wont let the game "die" as the same as Melee. Now Brawl "Vanilla" Brawl could have still brought out more new characters that were seen "bad" just like in Melee; however that's where Smash-4 comes in (and I stop here because you know what will happen if I continue and mention Smash-4 or known as that thing). Smash-4 will never the moments like Melee and Brawl as well as Smash-64 which is as well a masterpiece to play as. You can believe all you want that Smash-4 will have the moments those three game have but they wont, why? Because for starters the game is patched which is just stupid, next people whine more than ever now and Nintendo has actually given what they wanted; and that will never make them learn anything. Smash-4 will never ever have these moments, that is why moments wont be like these three game had a catastrophic era that is ended. Thanks.

heck if i know
im kinda hoping that smash 4 will get some time to sit rather than constantly getting new characters and balancing patches. melee "takes" the spotlight because its been the most popular smash game competetively, and its meta or whatever has had time to adapt over the years without significant changes. i think its gonna continue to sit at the top of the 4 because it (in my opinion at least) requires the most technical skill to be successful in.

Smash 4's doing fine. It's still kind of overshadowed by Melee, but it's done very well in its first year, with plenty of meta development and growth. I expect DLC and balance patches to end soon enough, and the game's balance overall is decent enough right now, though of course there's still room for improvement. Smash 4 is clearly not Brawl, and anyone who insists otherwise isn't really worth worrying about. It's done plenty to prove itself and is going to be just fine regardless of what any vocal minorities think as long as people like it and want to advance it as a game. Of course some people are going to like Melee or other games more and play those instead, and that's fine too. Overall things are way better when compared to the Brawl/Melee split, and I expect both scenes will continue to grow.
