Sakurai used to speak about customization and connectivity playing big part on the Wii U and 3DS-versions of SSB4.

" Making a portable version had its appeal for him, as they'd be able to do a number of new things. At the same time, there would be limits, as they'd be handicapped in some areas when it comes to offering the usual enjoyment areas of Smash Bros.

Specifically, Sakurai feels that a portable system makes the game a more "individual" experience in that, compared to a console, it's easier to make players attached to the data that they've built up and collected. The fact that you're carrying the hardware with you makes for a more personal experience.

The difficulty here is that the current Smash Bros. games haven't relied on rewards, collecting money or raising your character's level. There's no element of gaining experience to make your character stronger, Iwata noted.

Adding the notion of experience would pose a dilmena, explained Sakurai, as there are some players who would get into such a game, while others would not like it. Iwata added that placing a focus on experience would also make the game lose its instant play quality.

What Sakurai hopes to do is have the 3DS version of Smash Bros. allow players to build up their character through battle and rewards, then take their custom character to the Wii U version to face off against everyone. He feels it could be nice if they can make the "personal" portable space and the stadium-like "public" console space mesh together.

Iwata summed it the basic idea nicely: players would spend time on the 3DS version, building up their character and collecting stuff, then show off their skills on the Wii U version."

So far though there has been no mention of these things since two years ago, but I'm expecting to see these things being shown as the times until the release passes in the Dojo.

If this happened instead of huge customizations (eg. a whole new character) I'd like to see lots of references to old games with customizations like maybe Luigi having a white overalls suit in reference too his original costume way back when.

I wonder if Namco's involvement was based not only on their experience with fighting games, but with their history of character customization as well.

Sooooo... Miis confirmed? Wouldn't really make sense for any other characters to be customizable, as an experience system for all characters would suck. Customizing one character, though - it would make sense with the concept of the Miis as it is. You could adjust its size, its moves... seems like it could be fun.

I was just thinking it'd simply be just an outfit customization.
Which would work pretty well imo.

If Miis were truly the thing that Sakurai would end with on the whole customization thing, I'd be pretty underwhelmed. So... predictable and seems to pander at casuals again akin to many Mario-multiplayer/sport spinoffs. Unless they make it very amazingly done, I'd be very disappointed.

I have a hunch it will be something like Brawl's stickers and Kid Icarus: Uprising's power up system or selectable moves...

The main rumor going around the block is that based on a guy with Nintendo insider knowledge guessing Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, and Megaman all being in the game, that Little Mac, Pac-Man, and the Mii are all going to be new characters as well. I'm not really sure how I feel about it all, but it would make sense with the customization aspect to be for the Mii.

I never did like the brawl stickers thing. It would be fun to customize character stats though.
Imagine: A lot of speed-boosting sticks on Bowser to make him run faster than Falcon, or maybe power-boosting stickers to help Samus actually kill stuff. You know how Sakurai loves adding random things to some of his games, and offering hearts to the Goddess in Kid Icarus Uprising is one of those examples. Heck, adding WFT to the roster is one of those "random" things as well.

If the stickers applied to all gameplay though, that'd be a nightmare almost like pokemon with EVs and IVs. Sticker combinations for competition would suck...

In the Soul Calibur (correct me if spelled wrong) games, you could level up your characters when winning story mode right? Is that what Iwata was suggesting character customization would be like? Also I barely ever played SC so I am not sure if that is how they level up

SAKURAI PLEASE MAKE THE 3DS A CONTROLLER FOR THE WII U! The only way I would play the Wii U was if the 3DS could be a controller. People told me it's not gonna happen, but look at Villager and Wii Fit. If they make it, anything can happen *looks off into the distance in an inspirational way*

Maybe extra specials that you can pick and choose? Different Side Specials or something. I don't know.
Ya know, that would be cool to use in tournaments. You fight a character that has X move and figured out how to deal with it. Then you fight the same character with Y move, and you have to create a new strategy.

If Mii's are in I'd be happy :D but it should make so that we choose from different characters moveset or just have out own moveset ;)

It would be cool to have a Mii with MK's tornado, Sonic's dash attack, and other stuff.

I would hope that'd apply to all characters or be restricted in some way. Because a Mii with the absolute best specials would be ridiculous.

I don't think the Mii's will be the only one's customized though (if they are in the game). The 3DS will be the only version with the customization ability, so what will the Mii's on the Wii U have? It can't be where the Mii's are only for the 3DS, because Sakurai wants both games to have the same roster. If it were the Mii's only though (despite what I just said), I would give them my favorite moves. Not based off what is the best, but based of my preference. I'd rather have Pit's arrows and Shield (brawl shield), and Sonic's recovery. If I based it off of the cheapest moves, I would make him a MK clone.

I was thinking that maybe the Mii could be a character that can be given whole move sets from Veterans that were cut from newer smash bros. titles. Or, they could have a variety of move sets similar to Soul Calibur 3 (In SC3 you could make a character and they would give you jobs that had move sets. you can pick from the job list and each move set was sort of based on a main character's fighting style but with different weapons and you can level them up to unlock stronger move sets). So maybe we could get Dr. Mario back in the form of his move set being used by a Mii. And I heard something about the Ice Climbers not returning because the DS wouldn't be able to handle them. but If we could get a Mii that could use their move set (well.. sort of.. think of.. say you were Popo and Nana was knocked off the stage, then you'd just be the one ice climber). I'm sure after you customize your character on the 3DS you can upload him onto the WiiU roster and use him in the console version.

Mii's would be cool but a bit boring.

I'd hope for just multiple options for moves, or special moves at the very least. Like DK always needed more DK in his moveset. Barrel cannons for recovery, barrel throwing as a projectile, maybe even rambi, functioning like Wario's bike would work great and make more sense than the random moves he has now that HAL seemed to just pull out of their ass. Then just have the movepool tied to the nicknames.

That's the kind of thing I'm hoping anyway.
