Idk about the general consensus, but I feel like playing on a 3dsxl is a huge advantage when playing against a normal 3ds... With a 90% larger screen it will help in just about every scenario, especially with things such as spacing and being able to see what is going on... I have a normal 3ds right now, but i don't think it would do a justice to the game's potential, so I'm definitely going to buy a 3dsxl (Smas bros edition =))! The thing that makes me mad about this is the announcement of the New 3ds, but I just can't wait that long to play smash properly.. Wondering if you guys have any thoughts on the advantage of using a 3dsxl !

Honestly, you should wait for the new 3ds. If I had to guess, youll only have to wait a year or so. And if you have a 3ds, that should be fine.

There is an advantage with the bigger screen, sure. But its not that big of a deal. You'll get used to the regular screen. They built the game with that in mind. The real advantage, I think, is hand positions. If I play too long on my reg. 3ds, my hands cramp. But that doesnt happen on my xl.

In the end, I see a lot of people moving to wiiu, so I wouldnt go spend the money on a new ds just for smash. It wont matter as much after the console version comes out.

I don't think that it's a HUGE advantage. I think it'll just be a little bit like playing on a small TV vs a large TV - not all that big of an advantage.

Whether or not you should buy a new 3DS for Smash depends on whether or not you are going to play it when the Wii U version comes out. Personally, the 3DS version is just filler to me during the six weeks between the 3DS version and the Wii U version. If you feel the same way, then you probably shouldn't buy a new 3DS for Smash.

I've played the demo on the XL and have the real game for a Japanese original/vanilla 3DS and here are my thoughts:

Vanilla- It's actually pretty good. I was surprised that it looked so nice. 3DS games always look better ingame than in pictures, but it's just stunning. The characters are almost adorably small, but they're easy to see most of the time. I've only ever had problems when people run to the opposite end of the stage on large ones and when playing as DHD and the camera pans out to follow his B attack. Still, it looks and feels great.

XL- I was expecting a massive difference, but to my surprise, there wasn't one. Yeah, it looks a bit nicer and I like the size, but it wasn't noticeably nicer. Control-wise, it felt clumsily large in my hands after I had gotten used to the 3DS. True, I'll probably readjust when the English one comes out, but it's saying something when the vanilla 3DS controls just as well as the XL.

All in all, while I like the larger XL and am looking forward to playing Smash with it, I don't think that it's necessary. If you want to wait, get the New 3DS XL when it comes out internationally and rest easy knowing that the game will play just fine on your vanilla 3DS. If you don't want to wait and want to play it big, buy the special edition Smash 3DS XL since you'll get good usage out of it anyway, and if you want the New 3DS XL down the road, you can always trade in your old one for some money off on the new one.0

As tactician said it's not a big difference. Especially not big enough to waste buying a 3DS XL now when the "New" 3DS will likely be coming out next year.
The 90 % is a trick screen salesman use. Here's the realistic difference

On the original Nintendo 3DS, the screen measures at 3.53 in (90 mm), while on the 3DS XL it measures at 4.88 in (124 mm). The screen is able to produce a three-dimensional effect without the need of 3D-enabling glasses using a parallax barrier.

It is 30 % bigger when looking at length rather than area.

I think a lot of people forget the handy feature of being able to take note of a specific character by using the touch screen and clicking the column. It would make it easier to keep track of yourself.
