When the Wii U releases Smash, will the 3ds version see much play? Thinking realistically, I won't have much of a reason to play it other than during travel.

I'm not discrediting Smash 3ds, as it is a phenomenal game and few handheld games are good enough for me to play AT HOME while console or PC games are available.

But what do you guys think? Is the release of smash on the wii u going to hurt the 3ds one?

Do we REALLY need another doomsaying thread?

The install base of the 3ds is enough to keep the 3ds relevant for quite a while to come, and the game itself is still very good on the 3ds, it's just not 'console good.' As a stand alone game, Smash 3ds is amazing (online is meh, but leagues above Brawl), and it's still a fun experience.

Competitively, it'll be side event material, no doubt. It's not broken to the point where it's unplayable, and it's still a fun game, although the 3ds competitive community will be far less active than the Wii U version, but that's to be expected. It seems to me organizing a 3ds tourney would be pretty easy too, making it a good game for locals and such. Big events will still go Wii U, but it'd be quite easy to get a nice locals going for 3ds.

Instead of worrying about this, enjoy Smash 3ds for what it is, which is a damn fun game that's fully portable.

I do not mean this to be doomsaying whatsoever. Nor am I speaking from a competitive standpoint. I love the 3ds game!

just substitute ANY game for smash in this scenario that has a console and handheld version. (Idk, like Mario kart)

Idk how to reformat this question if you don't already get it, but I mean no offense.

The only issue is that this question has been asked a lot. Like this is not a new query. Competitive 3ds will exist, but it won't be to the scale of Wii U. Someone said something earlier about MLG including Smash 3ds if that gives you hope, and since I plan on maining the 3ds, I want it to stay competitive. But there's a lot of people who seem like they want to bury the 3ds as soon as the Wii U comes out, which seems selfish.

We won't see the same competitive following for 3ds as for Wii U for a lot of reasons (Wii U is easier to stream, better controls, better graphics, etc), but the 3ds has a lot going for it too, and I'd love to see both co-exist side by side.

Without a doubt most of us will be playing on the Wii U version as oppose to the 3ds, but I still think the 3ds will have it's competitors. As for me, the 3ds is very useful when I'm out & what not but I just know that once the Wii U version is out, the hype will rise by soo much. Just seeing every character render in hd is amazing. I'm curious if anyone will actually use the 3ds as a controller for the Wii U, pretty interesting feature.

I think it will enjoy a very long, healthy life, mostly through the Wii U version though. The mechanics of Sm4sh as the best of the entire series imo, and it has balance that none of the other installments (except maybe Smash 64) have. I think it has a chance of being as popular if not more popular then Melee, even in competitive circles, mostly because it doesn't require you to be a master at input exploits to be a top tier player. And then of course it improved in almost every way over Brawl so it will definitely be the preferred version over that. But yes, Sm4sh is here to stay, and while the 3DS version will probably become secondary to the Wii U version, it will always remain relevant.

It'll probably be fine for non-competitive players and those who cant afford a wii u. Competitors might not like the 3ds version due to weak controls, but that might not bother someone who's simply playing to have a good time and nothing more. Seeing as how some brawl players preferred the wiimote and nunchuck, I dont think the 3ds version's going anywhere.

This thread again? The 3DS version will still be played after Smash Wii U is released, for years. That is for sure. Do people have any idea how bigger the 3DS player base is compared to the Wii U player base? Even if Smash U push the sales of the Wii U, it will never reach half of the player base of the 3DS.

Sure, the extreme competitive players will move to the Wii U version and ignore the 3DS one (because GC controller, etc), but the majority of people (especially in Japan, where home consoles aren't that popular anymore) will keep playing Smash 3DS (or both versions, like I plan to do).
