I doubt it will be better than the first movie, judging from the trailer and the quality of recent episodes. The good news is that the creator Stephen Hillenburg who hasn't had hands-on involvement since around 2005 is returning to the series this month. I might actually check out a few episodes if they happen to get better after his return.
