3 Discoveries: Ftilt downwards (jab lock?), sliding downsmash, and Nair->Up-B

I played around with Luigi last night and discovered a few new things with him that surprised me. First was something that I'm sure is common knowledge to Luigi players, but I decided to include it anyways: Luigi's downwards Ftilt has strange properties, almost like Zelda's Dtilt. After some experimentation, I think it can work as a "jab" lock (like the laser lock but where you jab, walk forward, jab, etc.) but I apparently don't have the dexterity to pull it off consistently.

Second discovery was that Luigi can perform a sort of sliding downsmash quite easily. All you have to do is move forwards (but don't dash) and while you're holding the direction, hit down on the C-stick, and Luigi will do a little slide. Not exactly sure if this is useful at all, but its interesting nonetheless.

The last one is my favorite discovery (although it may be common knowledge by now). You can use a rising Nair on an opponent with low -mid percent (before it gets the awesome knockback) and "combo" it into the fire punch. I've been able to KO metaknight from 45% on FD using this. Sometimes you can just full hop a rising nair and up-B directly afterwards, depending on the character and on the percent they are at. Other times, when you knock them a bit high, you can do the same thing, but jump right before the up-B to read DI and/or just get that little distance you need. You can even mix it up and stuff by doing things like a short hop rising nair then jump and up-B after that. In all honesty, the way a person recovers from rising nair (i.e. with an airdodge, good DI, an attack, etc.) will vary between your opponents probably, so it requires you to be able to read them sometimes.

I'll be making a video of this soon I think, so stay tuned :D

Very interesting stuff, samuraipanda. I think i was already aware of the downsmash sliding a little bit if you're moving foward but the downward ftilt being used as a jablock is really interesting. I'll have to experiment with it :)

Okay so I experimented just to confirm whether or not the jab lock and nair -> up b thing work. The nair thing really isn't new now that I see what you meant and it really isnt a reliable combo against anyone who DIs well. Trying this in a match will most likely result in an aerial to the face or some form on ungodly punishment when you land.

As far as the jab lock, I'm not sure what to think. It appears to jab lock and keep the opponent on their backs or w/e but every so often the opponent will pretty much instantly be back on their feet right after one of the hits.

lol sorry panda. i've known this since brawl came out LOL. i could have sworn this is all common knowledge (except the possible jab lock thing?)

nair -> fire punch has been a combo since melee times. tooooo good.

Which is why I said that this is all probably old news to people. What are you doing checking the Luigi boards anyways? Shoo, lain.

And yeah, I don't get a whole lot of time to just sit in training mode for awhile and discover things with every char, so when I do, it makes me feel special :D

A lot of the common knowledge stuff is new to me... sadly... I don't get to spend a lot of time in training mode either. Is there a vid of the jab lock thing somewhere?
