20GB or 60GB 360?

I've been tasked with finding a bargain on a 360 for my little brother to buy (just missed Hot Topic's $199 Halo 360 steal) and as of 9/10/08 the 20GB models are $260 whilst the 60GB is $300. I have a $330 budget and am trying to make the most of it (not buying the Arcade because m$ ***** customers with HDD prices, at least with an enclosure I can upgrade cheap using HDDHackr if the need arises).

At this point I'm leaning towards just getting the 20GB model and putting the saved $40 towards a game but the 60GB models are supposedly rolling out a new chipset (again). The RRoD was one of the main reasons I bought a PS3 for myself, so I'm really trying to make sure this doesn't happen with the model I buy now.

Based on the architecture in the last 20GB models produced, should I wait and buy one with the new chipset or just get a cheap 20GB?

I'd just go with the 20 GB unless you really want more space. It's up to you. I've had a case with RRoD in the past but that's with the first wave of 360s. I haven't had the red ring ever since.

There is absolutely no reason to spend more money and get the 60 GB version when you can just upgrade the HDD anyway. Go with the 20, and if space becomes a problem (it really shouldn't), upgrade to a bigger laptop HDD.

I'd get the 20GB because I want more space, it's the cheapest way to get an enclosure that the 360 will accept. My logic behind buying a 60GB was for the new chipset on the August 2008 machines, which likely are just now hitting stores if even here yet.

That's a brilliant PS3 argument (you left out BC), but I'm happy with my 80GB and a media server, thanks. As of right now only very specific WD SATA drives will work with a 360 (20, 60, 120GB are the only ones I know that work). Not just any drive will work, the 360 will recognize it but it'll be just like a USB hdd in that you can't store anything but standard media on it (no demos, game data, etc.). I fully intend to upgrade the HDD to 120GB myself; no way am I shelling out for m$ at a rate of more than $1/GB...again, chipset would be the purchasing reason for the 60GB.

Out of the four people I know who own 360s, three have had an RRoD (one had three) so I would really like one with the new chipset, but with the extended RRoD warranty it's probably not worth $40.

I really need a bigger hard drive for my 360. I've got 4.3GB left on my 20GB. After I transfer my Rock Band 1 songs from the disc to my hard drive, that's another 1.52GB eaten up.

Though, apparently at the GameStop employee expo a few days ago, Microsoft told GameStop employees that the 60GB hard drive will be available to purchase as a standalone for $100 sometime soon, and it'll come with 3 months of Xbox Live. I hope "soon" is, you know, soon, because I really want to upgrade my hard drive sooner rather than later because of DRM. My friends are going to hate me when I use the DRM transfer tool too, as I've purchased some Rock Band songs and Arcade games on friends systems using my gamertag so they could have the content as well.

I'm about to get a 360 myself on a $300 budget and i've been leaning towards getting an xbox arcade so i can get a game and another controller. :/ But idk if space will become an issue with me? Because i don't plan on downloading a lot but i plan on downloading a little. What would you guys recommend me to do?

The arcade isn't that good since there's no hard drive. You'll need memory cards and you won't be able to save a lot of DLC on those memory cards if you choose too.
