1: Is there any way to dash cancel into down tilt at a shorter distance? instead of just running til marth crouches, because i'm looking for ways to make my approach better but it seems i gotta go like halfway across the level before marth crouches :[

2: There was a rough list of all the tech skills marth needs that i'm pretty sure i found on smashboards,, but i can't seem to find it even with the search function ._.;; can someone link me to it? or am i just crazy and imagined it >.>;;

1. wavedash into crouch

2. Tech skills marth needs (really not all tech skills...just things you need to be able to do)
1. Double short hopped f-air
2. F-air to d-air (ken combo)
3. D-air to f-smash (on crouch cancelers)
5. Ledgetech consistently
6. Sweetspot consistently
7. Develop mindgames lol.

As an extention of answer 1 to question 2, SH fair --> uair is also very useful for maintaining control during a combo.

Thats basicly common sense for marths, don't give specific combo advice.

F-air to d-air takes abit of practice as to when to jump again and spike or fastfall the spike and use the stage to save yourself.

D-air to f-smash is marth's answer to crouch cancelers as his air game is very limited against them due to their counterattacks.

Biggest thing you have to understand is not to combo all day, end the combo and get the stock. Marth has a huge problem with people that live into high %s so get that kill earlier or you will regret it.

I feel it's more important just to learn the basics of the game and general tech skills before you try marth's specific stuff. If you have a decent hold of the more general techniques, then comboing with marth should come pretty intuitively as soon as you learn the range of his sword. Don't memorize combos, but just learn to see what you can do in different situations. You'll find that a lot of his combos depend on the opponent's DI, and stringing one hit into another depends on your ability to follow that DI and react accordingly. Go into training and experiment with some of marth's options but learn how to change your combos depending on how a human DIs. And as mentioned, don't forget to finish a combo with a KO move whenever you think you can get the stock.

I think you were talking about my "essay" on why Marth is a technical character because of spacing, but the thread died because people wouldn't take it seriously. Anyway, here's my list:

1) Edgehop spiking
2) Short-hop double FAir
3) Short-hop FAir -> UAir
4) Chainthrowing Fox+Falco from 0% - death (come on, Ken and others have proved that it's possible) + FThrow -> tipped FSmash spacing on floaties (very useful in Marth dittos)
5) Wavedashing + wavedashing out of shield
6) Pivot FSmash
7) Dash attack -> UTilt on the opposite side + alternating UTilts (not very hard, but awkward when you do it for the first time)
8) SPACING

thanks everyone, this is all a big help @_@ but the list i was looking for, maybe i said it wrong so you all misunderstood, but it was a list of all the basic tech skills that marth needs to know (just stuff like WD, SH, LC, etc.) and then the basic marth-specific skills, like SHDF and whatnot. :p

Regardless, the info I got out of this thread has helped more than enough as it gave a lot of the marth specific skills and combos as well as the basics that i was looking for xD

Thanks again for the help ^^;

Wavedashing and l-canceling are like the "dur" things to know around here...

and yeah, emblem lords thread would prove wise to look over.

Once you get the basic's down, work on spacing
