I am relatively new to the competitive Smash Bros scene in general, so I am looking at Sm4sh as the game to start with. (Sorry if this is in the wrong section also)

I was reading somethings about a custom moves debate on whether or not they should be legal. Personally I could not care one way or another about them, I think I have messed around with them once. I was wondering if anyone has given any thought to having one set rather than 10. This one set would be the only legal set on the character (including defaults). I think this could provide some balance to the game and players would not have to learn every single custom.

As I said before I am new to the scene, so I don't know if this idea has been tossed around or what sets would be legal. Mainly I am asking if anyone else thinks that this could be a good idea or if I am just going insane.

I'm just going to tell you flat out, this will never happen. Especially with the way customs are currently viewed.

I don't even know what the advantage of having one set would be.

edit: like, if people really don't want to learn every custom, why don't we just ban some characters? That way we won't have to learn every match up. God forbid that you have to learn something about the game you're currently playing.

One of the issues would be that we would have complex bans and then people will go the ban one ban all way.

The idea of "manually" balancing the game by restricting characters to specific ability loadouts has been considered. For instance, nerf Sheik's stupid good everything by forcing her to use Stunning Needle, which is singular, not storable, and has notable endlag. Similarly, forcing Diddy to use non-tripping bananas was discussed when he was the broken character.

It was all shot down as unnecessary, especially with the game receiving periodic balance patches. Once those balance patches stop coming, who knows, maybe the idea will be entertained again. But for now, it's not considered necessary.

Not to mention most characters who benefit from customs in the first place benefit from more than one possible loadout. That could obviously change over time, but even if that becomes the case, gradually narrowing down to that ideal set requires more to be available for experimenting in a larger competitive setting.

The best implementation of customs would obviously be to allow players to quickly select any combination they want at the CSS. However, the game's interface prevents that, so we go with the next best solution: we discuss what's optimal on a character-per-character basis, and put the top ten contenders in the list. Smaller events can let people tweak stuff, larger events like EVO make you pick from the top ten. This way, the most people possible are happy (aside from the sticks in the mud who don't want to learn new tricks in a new game), and the "best sets" are available and not restricted to one per character.
