Seems they changed the Youtube/Miiverse upload and actually addressed the common complaint of being unable to upload matches longer than 3 min. They compensate by borrowing from Mario Kart 8 in which the replay is automatically cut - focusing on random match moments and KOs. When matches replays are not fully converted, the upload option is called "Create Highlight Reel" when asking for confirmation.

What are your thoughts on this?

Edit: Whoops, typo on the title. Meant 1.11.

Edit 2: I just turned a 4 min 1v1 FG match against a Marth into a 40 second clip. This disappointed me as it cut my true highlight moment which was my "BULL****, YOU SHOULD OF DIED" recovery and swift counter attack.

Highlight real would be a good option...if it was an option instead of a "You want this, we don't agree and will give you what you didn't ask for!"

Another good option (if it was an option) would be a custom highlight real from the match... computers can't read our minds... at least not 100% of the time.

But the fact there isn't an option for "Upload it in full then shut down Wii U." is a miss... That would allow players to start the long process when they are on their way out the door/to bed and then conserve energy... Solves the upload time problem in a way, and gives us what we actually wanted.

An option for quick highlight real upload, take the time to make one upload, and spend a long freaking time getting the whole thing upload would have been nice. Those who don't like the really quick match play style are still being denied this feature... which sucks.

Strangely enough, version 1.10 did allow me to upload a match that was 3'08" long. I never did thoroughly test where the cutoff point truly was. It is unfortunate that I no longer have that same match to test whether this version would treat it differently, as it wouldn't let me upload anything last night while I was still on 1.10 after 1.11 came out.

As for the upload-and-shut-down-while-sleeping method, I did this often for Kart, and it has worked fine in Smash for me as well since I enable the shutdown after one hour on my Wii U. As a handy tip, you can also eject the disc during uploads from either game, and it won't impact the upload at all. Often, I'd start a Kart upload, then swap out discs so that Smash would be ready for me the next day when I'd first power up the system.

A customized highlight reel would be very sufficient for most players' needs.

Maybe next patch.
Depends...

If I am uploading a replay it is likely to get feedback on how to improve. I don't want to show my best, I want those critiquing me to see the match from beginning to end.

Right, you are, in that case, not one of "most players."

When I save replays, it's either to capture a glitch moment, or for a hype kill, both of which would be sufficiently covered by any three minutes of my choosing.

Even if you're after near-complete gameplay critique, there are bound to be a few seconds here and there where nothing significant happened. Though you're also in the relatively small group of Rosalina mains, whose matches tend to drag out longer with relatively less of visible significance happening (this isn't an attack, this is a statement of how the character typically plays out, see Dabuz).

Even so, being able to select the most important three minutes (or, for that matter, make a three-minute long highlight of the first half of the match, and then make another of the second half. Time consuming, but more flexible than what we have currently) gives you the ability to focus in on areas where you think you need improvement, and would save your viewers time as well. It's not as comprehensive, but for most people, it's still more convenient.

So you can't upload full matches anymore at all, even if they're under 3 minutes? Do they all get made into a highlight reel or only if they're over three minutes?

Only if it exceeds the three minute mark. Previously, you couldn't upload it at all.

That wouldn't be ideal... but I'd grudgingly take it... still I suspect people would be a lot less likely to watch and critique if it involved upwards of 3 adds.

I imagine it would depend on the person. I'm more interested in critiquing situations than watching someone and their opponent stare each other down or dance around for a bit before anything happens.

It's a matter of striking a balance between parts that need critique without including parts that don't. What I consider boring/irrelevant is probably different from what you do, and what you think you need critique on may be different from what I see.

Obviously the ability to upload a video up to, say, ten minutes or so, would be more ideal (most Smash matches aren't so long). Or even remove the limit entirely (though I'm sure there are logistical issues with that on Nintendo's end). But having the extra options for people of different preferences would be the real ideal way to do it.
