Developing Mother 3 was probably one of the worst experiences Nintendo has ever dealt with, particularly for Itoi, Miyamoto, and Iwata. Whenever I think of the story, all I can feel is their sadness over it all.
Itoi is alive and well, and has his own company outside of the gaming industry that is doing well for itself. I'd imagine he just wouldn't want to touch the series again anymore, and I don't blame him.
