You don't just add the safest characters, and you don't just add obscure characters for the sake of being obscure. In that same vein, you support your characters with logic. You cover all the "bases."

I suppose I do try to justify my choices.
There are exceptions, obviously; Chrom is on my roster because he is considered obvious by almost everyone, but generally I do use discretion.

Indeed. I am the same way, all of the BS reasons I made up for Black Shadow or Meowth. I mean, they were legitimate reasons, but I overly justified them. Haha.

Those are actually good character choices, honestly. The only reason I didn't support Meowth, in fact, was because I didn't even expect a Pokemon newcomer. Black Shadow is a little more iffy; on the one hand, he's cool and prominent in F-Zero, on the other, I just want him to take Ganondorf's moveset so Ganon gets a new one.
