I think Tails and Knuckles are ahead of Shadow for the second Sonic the Hedgehog representative. Shadow was a favorite because people thought Shadow could be an echo of Sonic but I am not 100% sure if it could work since Shadow does have some unique abilities.

Yeah, with Marth and Lucina, I have sometimes struggled against ranged characters, Samus especially seems to be problematic. Also characters with just longer reach such as Simon/Richter, Byleth, and Corrin stand out.

This is a tough one because of the swap out aspect. I would go over having a non sword welding Fire Emblem character (one that leads with axe or spear). That would be very novel in design. Maybe replace Chrom or Roy. Problem is that I know the characters very well from the two Fire Emblems...
